Newbie (sort of) disabled vet question

Howdy all.

I had my first TX CHL back in 2000, and let it expire in '05 when I spent a lot of time without a physical address (full time RV'er). Now I am re-applying for a new one, and have read that legislation passed in '07 waived, or lowered the fee for disabled vets.

I'm a retiree on 100% V.A. disability, and wonder if anyone knows the facts on that particular bit of information. I have my certification letter that I file with the tax folks each year, and need to know if that is all the evidence needed, or will I need other paperwork from the V.A.

I searched here, and either did not find, or overlooked the info if it's here.

If anyone has a link to either the topic on the board, or an external one, I would be grateful.

Vets get a 50% discount for the license.

I am not aware of a discount based on disability. Just the veteran one mentioned.

Here is a link to the fee schedule. I am also a disabled vet but only can get the 50% discount which is still pretty nice. Make sure you still have your DD-214.

I do, in fact, have a copy of my 214.

I believe the copy of your DD214 needs to be a certified copy and can be notarized. Make sure it is legible.
Of course you can always call DPS (may take quite a while to get through) and ask to be sure.

I just sent in my packet today I did not send a certified copy because I did not see anywhere it said to send it in at all, my instructor told me I needed to send it but did not say anything about being certified.


Can anyone find an official reference so I can rest easy or cry.

update: so far this is what I have found. I am resting easy for the moment, but still searching.

I JUST got off the phone with the folks in Austin (1-800-224-5744). The pleasant young lady I spoke to said that the copy of the DD-214 does NOT...I repeat NOT need to be certified, BUT you must make sure it is a copy of the entire document, and it MUST say "Honorable Discharge".

From that I can safely conclude that you needn't start crying yet.

You are correct. I sent a copy of my DD214 that was just that. A copy. I had no problem with that.

i am 60% currently and all i included was my va letter stating i was at least 60% and the check for half the fee,
its almost as good as the free drivers license and 3 bux a year to register my RV

I also just used a regular (not-notarized) copy of my DD-214. Just made sure it had the page with 'honorable discharge'

Disabled vets receive low cost plates, registration, and low cost or free DL. The fees on hunting and fishing licenses are also free. The fee to enter state parks is also waived.

I too just sent in a copy of my DD-214, non notarized.

Since I'm still waiting, I'm not positive that it was accepted, but I haven't heard anything to the contrary.

What level of disability I am only 10%.
