I would think that the .50BMG would have been 'way more than was needed, since the range was short and there were no barriers to penetrate. The .308 certainly would have worked just fine in that scenario, but I haven't seen any information from a reliable source on what the SEALS actually decided to use. Whatever it was, they made a great choice!

When I was doing my "precision" shooting in the Navy, five inch guns at five thousand yards, I managed to hit the ten ring without stabilization. Just fire on the roll, as the crosshair hits the horizon, and believe it or not, you have to squeeze the trigger with those big guns too.

I have no idea what technology the Navy Seals have, but from a technological standpoint, the technology exists today to help with things like head tracking.

It is certainly possible to build some kind of mount that the gun sits on that is computer controlled and that can lock on and track a head even while the head and/or you are moving. All the sniper would have to do is pull the trigger once the command is given.

So, while the snipers may well have taken those shots without any kind of assistance, the idea of the existence of some kind of stabilization or other computer assisted mechanism is certainly within the realm of possibility.

I can help you do it, a simple feedback loop with servo motors . . . Oops already done. The big problem is making that setup small enough to be man portable.

I think the "stabilizers" were bipods. According to the sketch on one of the news pieces of three seals laying on the deck, and aiming at the BGs.

Keep in mind that the guys on the fantail with bipods and rifles are just a nice picture to throw us all off. We may never know the actual methodology of what happened, and in my opinion, we shouldn't.
