Todays' Dallas Morning News
Todays' Dallas Morning News has a story on pending legislation allowing concealed carry on college campuses that has me steaming! The article features a college grad who's girl friend was killed in the Virginia Tech slayings. Now he is afraid "if students have guns on campus, that can only create more danger." This is the brand of logic liberals employ in their own lives. If he had spent more time thinking about defending his girl friend against this type of attack instead of "spending quite a bit of time feeling like a victim", he might realize the only way to stop this is to arm ourselves. And BTW, it was illegal at the time to bring a gun onto the campus of Viginia Tech. Did that even cross Seung-Hui Cho's mind. I would bet my sidearm it didn't. I wrote a letter to the editor of DSM blasting the promotion of this kind of reasoning. I hope you will do the same.

Yeah, this one got my goat too.
Glad you wrote the editor. That's on my to do list for today also.
The "victim" is in Austin and is anti-gun. Gee, go figure.
His "feeling like a victim" is a personal choice he has made and not one I will make.

Ill send you the address were you can send your sidearm. Becasue would bet it did cross his mind. He knew his victims would be unarmed and not able to fight back. He chained the doors to keep them from getting out and to keep the Police from comming in. He knew that actions would let him carry out his rampage for longer than say shooting up the local mall.toaster wrote: And BTW, it was illegal at the time to bring a gun onto the campus of Viginia Tech. For a graduate student in molecular biology, that guy is kind of dumb, if not borderline stupid. But this idea that school shooters would be deterred, or that licensed students or professors would be in the right place at the right time – I just don't buy it.

He's further proof that someone can be extremely intelligent in a very narrow scope of knowledge, and dumb as a box of hammers outside of that scope.casingpoint wrote:For a graduate student in molecular biology, that guy is kind of dumb, if not borderline stupid. But this idea that school shooters would be deterred, or that licensed students or professors would be in the right place at the right time – I just don't buy it.
Or as my wife likes to tell me, just because you have a college degree doesn't mean you have common sense. I look back at the time in my life when I was his age and a university student, and I'd have to agree with her.

Re: Todays' Dallas Morning News
A couple of years back I never thought I would someday carry a firearm. Didn't even know or heard of CHL, nor had ever seen a 3006 sign. However, with the increase of gun violence, I decided that if I needed to protect my love ones I needed to find a way. Being a responsible person and wanting to legally carry I wound up in a CHL class March of 2008. Since receiving my CHL I always carry. There's a NEED to legally carry and understand and uphold the responsibility that CHL carries.(I was so unaware of those responsibilities) My wife disagrees with me. She's one of those persons who thinks that for protection GUNS is not the answer.(She lets me carry, though)This negative way of thinking really scares me. I just can't understand the postings of 3006 signs and GUN FREE ZONES that ONLY affect the responsible CHL holder. It's very hard to have persons like my wife understand the urgent need to be able to defend ourselves.(Unknowingly, I was probably one of them) But no more, I opened my eyes and will always carry as the law permits. There's a need for responsible students and teachers to legally conceal carry. Otherwise, how many more campus killings will it take for Law Makers to open their eyes?

Really? Did you ask her what IS the answer? Roll over, play dead, beg for mercy, appeal to the criminal's gentler side? Just be a good victim and take what's coming? Hope for the best?roge wrote:My wife disagrees with me. She's one of those persons who thinks that for protection GUNS is not the answer.
I really NEED to know! The LAST thing I want to do is blast the bejeebers out of some poor misguided scum bucket who thinks he can take advantage of me.

You should ask her if she thinks LEO's are there to protect people.. Then do a search for victims who called the cops, only to have them not show up, or show up 45 minutes later..
Happened to me about a month ago, a very dangerous situation involving some teens ( around 10-15 to be exact ), 1 of which sneaking up trying to assault me, and 1 of them using their car to attempt to run my dad over. Long long story.... We had called the police, they told us it would be 45 minutes, and we were on our own.. I knew we were anyways, I'm going to protect myself and loved ones no matter what, but only called them to make them aware of the situation. It was a dead serious situation that could have turned out with some lives lost, luckly that didnt happen... The sad part is, every one of these teens got off, not even a slap on the wrist. Wasn't the first time they've done this, and it doesn't make me feel good knowing they are still out there doing what they did to us, thinking nothing will happen to them ( because they have gotten off many times, so I've heard from some LEO's that have been trying to bust them )... Who was there to protect me and my loved ones? Nobody but me, myself and I..
Thats what drives me up the wall, people dont want to take responsibility for their own protection. They expect someone to do that for them, and it's not going to happen, or to put it better, it's unlikely thats going to happen.. So their thinking is take away the "tools" that people use to assault people, and it will all go away.. The ONLY thing that will make it go away, is to make those people go away. I dont like the fact that I need to carry a gun to protect myself, and I cant just use my fists, but thats not the way it is. If it's not guns, or knifes, it's going to be anything that can be thrown, or swung. I want to be on equal terms, or better.. Short of having a LEO hold my hand everywhere I go, a gun is the next best thing..
As for the news story, it's not at all surprising to me they found a anti-gun person to give their opinion. Of all these news stories about legalizing concealed carry on college ground's, I dont think I've read any opinion's from anyone who has common sense, or who isn't biased one way or another..

Re: Todays' Dallas Morning News
I, of course, wrote to the DMN about the article, and took them and the author to task for the inaccurate "90,000 CHLs" statement. She, the author wrote back:
Mr. Longley,
Thank you so much for your perspective. Can I hang onto your contact information for future stories on this topic?
Emily
I don't know whether to feel insulted or what, no answer to the question of why 90,000 instead of 314,000, just "Thank you so much for your perspective."
I emailed her the DSP web site page with the correct satistics.
I had a letter published on Monday, about Sharpton, so I'll bet I don't get this one in.
