might want to try http://www.gunbroker.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
my little brother has picked up a SKS from there at a reasonable price

Cheapest ones I saw at the Pasadena show were Romanian WASRs. I bought three of them last year and gave around $375 for them. They were going for around 600 at the show. Some will say the Romanians are some of the worst AKs out there, and there are some that are better than others, even though they are from the same importer. Look over any WASR you are considering, and look for canted front sights, and look at the quality of the cut they make in the mag well to accept double stack magazines. Put a magazine in the rifle, and check for sloppy side to side motion. a little bit is acceptable, and even if its a bit more, it should still feed fine. Give the rifle a very thorough cleaning, and it will serve you as well as any other AK. Mine are all good to go, and other than the one I gave to my dad that was still full of cosmoline, I havent had any problems at all. Dads is a good shooter too. It was jamming cause it was full of grease.

As I have said before, you can spend what you want on an AK, but in the end, you will still have an AK. They are not meant to be match shooters, but are a very durable, forgiving rifle.

At the current prices, I would say that if you find a good one in the range of 500-700 you should jump on it if you really want one. I fear the day will soon be here when we wont be able to buy anymore. I hope Im wrong.

these *seem* to be about the cheapest you'll find. ~$20 shipping and another $20 for FFL fee, depending.

The ones at the shows, from what I've seen, are still $50-$100 more all together. I have a 59/66 from samco from when they were will under $200, its actually pretty nice.

Like stated above figure out what you want...have cash in hand...watch for a deal and be ready to jump. There is a big price difference between an AK and an SKS. I just received a Lancaster AK I ordered at the beginning of November and I paid just over $700 new. I did not have to worry about the sight cant issue, mag wobble or any other issue with mine from Lancaster. But that was the security I got when I paid a little more and ordered new then waited. I also looked a WASR rifles at gun shows before deciding to buy from Lancaster. I was not impressed by the WASR at all. When I was looking they were already in the 600 range at the local shows. So a little more money and some time got me a great rifle with a few personal touches and nothing to worry about. Good luck.

So what is so horrible about the Romanian WASRs. I just bought one private sale for $500 cash and thought I did pretty good. I've run only 100 rounds through it so far and it was 100%. I was using cheap steel cased lacquer coated ammo from Academy. It seemed to shoot to POA also. Overall I think I did OK.

AK47. Get a side folding stock if you can find one. Be sure to inspect the barrel and the bolt. Look at the flash hider to make sure the rim is not pitted.

I'd get the steel magazines. At least 6.

Its a great weapon.
