Homeowner shoots back at M-16/AR-15 wielding robbers

CCTV:Feb 05/09.Tucson,Arizona,A homeowner, alerted of an impending home invasion by his security cameras, arms himself and takes matters into his hands last Thursday when four armed suspects attempt to break into his home.

The video the owner caught is incredible. You see a vehicle pull up, and four men run out. One of them is carrying what appears to be an AR-15 or M-16, a weapon which could be fully automatic.

The robbery happened last Thursday in broad daylight at a home on West Vande Loo Street. All the action was caught by the homeowners outdoor surveillance system.

"The victim was able to get back inside his house, close his door, semi barricade it, reach for [a] weapon that was easily accessible," says Pima County Sheriff's Deputy Earl Gieron.

The homeowner shot at the suspects. He even put a bullet through the windshield of the suspects car, which is also caught on camera. The four men retreated and took off. All of them remain on the run.

Sheriff's officials say the homeowner has surveillance cameras installed all around his house.

Dep. Gieron says, "That was just for his own security."

People living in the neighborhood heard all the gunshots, and saw the aftermath. Some stray bullets even hit a home across the street.

One man says, "I was asleep around noon Thursday, and heard gunshots."

Lawrence Cruz lives down the street from where the attempted home invasion happened.

"I am very watchful where we live and I think everybody has right to defend their property," says Cruz.

Detectives did find the suspect's vehicle at a home near Cardinal and Valencia, but the four men are still on the run.

One of the suspects has been identified as 23-year-old Jesus Mendivil. It's believed he was shot in the arm.

The three other men are all described as Hispanic males between 17 and 25-years-old.

That was wild, good for the home owner. One thing I got from it was that while we all then to over think our guns, bullets & cailbier. Main thing is to have a gun, as even though he was out numbered & out gunned. He still came out on top because he was prepared & aware of his surrondings.

Keep your sidearm on you and a long gun close by at all times. This could happen to anyone at anytime.

If you don't mind me asking via an anonymous Internet forum: what'd you install? It's the type of question you often can't get a straight answer to in person. . . nobody wants to reveal their security system.

That's ceratainly a crazy story. Makes me wonder what he might have that they wanted so badly.

I am not picking on you by any means, but it is unlikely that the rifle was fully automatic. While some AR's can be illegally modified to fire full auto these guys probably aren't that savvy.

I am only pointing this out because the anti-gun folks want everyone to believe that every black rifle involved in a crime is of the select fire variety and it simply isn't true. It adds an extra element of fear to their fight so they continue to propagate this misinformation even though automatic weapon ownership has been heavily regulated since 1965.

Too bad the got away! I am glad they identified one of them and I hope they catch him soon. I am glad the homeowner didn't hit a neighbor with a stray shot and that would be some bad publicity. I wonder if the BGs ever got a shot off????

No problem; I bought a Geovision GV-600 off of Ebay and then bought four night/day cameras from a local electronic parts outlet... I then spent a full weekend crawling around in my attic running cable. Breathing fiberglass, using a hammer drill to pound camera mounts and cable holes, up the ladder, down the ladder, move the ladder... it was not a whole lot of fun, but when I was finished it was very cool. Works like a champ! I have easy online access and have hidden my storage devices.
If you're interested in setting up a system I highly recommend the CCTV forum. http://www.cctvforum.com/. I spent about a month just reading before I went out and bought my gear. You'll save money and most likely a lot of frustration if you do the same.

BTW just because I have a surveillance system doesn't mean I'm hiding something. I can't believe the audacity of some people. I even had a co-worker ask me if I put it in to watch out for the cops. What? Be unprepared if you want to, but not me... I refuse to be a hapless victim if I can help it. My family means more to me than that.

I am running a camera covering my driveway after my car was burgled last year. I just bought a wireless IP cam made by Airlink. I use a software package called Blue Iris to record motion events to my PC. It works great and I have actually turned a couple of videos over to the local police detectives showing where I had kids trying the doors of my vehicles parked in the driveway.

Is the clarity of the image good enough to ID facial features?
I need to cover about 50' of driveway. Is the Airlink capable of doing this?
What are the system requirements for the computer?

Good story! I guess the only bad part is that the Home Owner did not have to call the Coroner!
