Emergency Board Maintenance

#1

Post by Charles L. Cotton »

I had to take the Board down for about two hours to remove the chat feature. My web host said it was causing a problem with the server, but I seriously doubt that. It had been operating for 3 months with no problems.

I will investigate this and hopefully I'll be able to reinstall the chat mod, if people want it. In all candor, it didn't see much use, so I may not reinstall it.

Removing a mod is actually harder than installing it, so please let me know if you experience any trouble with the board. I may have messed up a hack.

Sorry I couldn't give any prior warning before taking the board down.

I thought it was cool but it seemed rarely used.

Are there any more technical details as to how it was causing problems?

I'm still trying to get that information. The short version is that it was overloading the server; I'm not buying that. It queried the database every 5 seconds, i.e. 720 times per hour. That's nothing. I cleared it with their support dept. before installing it and they said it wouldn't be a problem. I suspect they had a server problem that had nothing to do with my account. I've been on icdsoft for about 4 or 5 years and they have been great. This is the only problem I've had.

Querying the database every 5 second could be problematic depending on how the queries and indexes were set up. Still if this was a plugin one would think they were optimized to be fairly efficient.
