Opinions on Mossberg Model 100 .270

I just put one on Layaway Saturday...I'll get it out this friday and sight it in Sunday morning, weather permitting.

Jeez, I love working next door to a pawnshop that deals heavily in guns.

Sometimes you just find some good deals. Hopefully the scope that comes on it isn't crap. It's a TASCO 6x-24x with a 40mm objective.

Anyways. Anybody have any experience with this gun...good? bad? AWESOME??? hopefully.

I am far from an expert shot, even less so when it comes to scoped rifles. I am a pure novice and had never shot a bolt action before I got my Mossberg 100ATR. I have a 3x-9x 40mm Bushnell Banner series on mine which was a tad over $100. The rings are cheap...$6 Cabella's medium rise see-thru. Anywho, I say that because I want it to further speak to this rifles capability.

This was me zeroing at 100 yards on a warm summer day. Forgot to write conditions. Obviously as the barrel heated up, the groups opened. But that first group says it all about what you can expect out of the 100ATR. Forgive quality its on a cellphone. When I finally make it back to the range with it, I will try different brands and see what groups best in my rifle. Alright, I will shut up and let the results speak for themselves!



Hope yours is just as good. Might want a better piece of glass eventually though, Tasco is sub par in my experience. Either way, for the price, it can't be beat. Let us know how yours does!

Thanks brother.....I've got a Leupold laying around at my parents house collecting dust....if i'm not happy with the Tasco, I may give it a try.

I've also given some thought to NC Star optics....my boss has one for the hog setup on his RockRiver AR-15, and he's been happy with it.


All in all, I can't wait!

I've also given some thought to NC Star optics....my boss has one for the hog setup on his RockRiver AR-15, and he's been happy with it.

NC Star is another budget optic, but I can't talk about it because I have not used one. Through my research and first hand experience, Burris is the best bang for buck but after I bought the rifle I was too anxious to get it to the range and bought what I could afford. The Bushnell came highly recommended for the money I had on hand. It is no frills, but it has so far proved a solid choice. If you want a US made scope, expect to spend more obviously. A shooter is only is good as his equipment, so a good quality piece of glass could be the difference of taking home that buck or not! Choose carefully my friend, and practice much.

I forgot all about the pics

Did pretty good, first couple of shots were screwy because I was sucking down coffee this morning, making me kind of twitchy. I took a break from it......came back, and three shots later, was grouping no larger than a dollar bill.

Fired another couple of rounds to be sure, then packed it up.

Here soon I'm gonna mount a Harris bipod to it....and I may change up the optics. Not sure yet. Definitely putting a Harris and a sling on it though.

I'll take a cell phone pic of the rifle and email it to myself, I don't have a camera. I'll try to post it up sometime soon.

Once again, an amateur rifle shooter here, but when you shoot, a good way to do it is shoot 3 and then let it cool for 10-30 min. When the barrel heats up it starts to twist and will differ from your first cold barrel shot. Generally speaking the more you shoot the more your groups get wacky. So good breaks are essential when shooting scoped rifles and trying to get tight groups. Maybe someone will correct, but I can surely say that when I went the first time and sighted shooting 20 rounds consecutively, when I went back my zero was WAY off. So the process i mentioned seemed to work well for me.

I thought I posted this before, but since you own the gun, here is a link to a write up that I did on how to modify the trigger. The guns are very accurate right out of the box. The biggest problem I experienced was the trigger. I own 3 of these guns, 1 ATR100 in .270 (camo stock), 1 4X4 in 30-06 (pepper laminated wood stock ), and a 7MM Magnum (black synthetic skeletonized stock & marine coat finish).

I have done triggers on all of them and find them to be much more accurate, and enjoyable, after the trigger job.

The gun apparently already had a trigger job done to it...after I cleaned it up, the trigger gauged out at around 2.5 lbs
