I opened a P.O. box and had to have a 2nd ID. Everything I had as a 2nd form would not work, The lady asked if I had my CHL because that was accepted. That has been the only time I used it as an ID.

That doesn't happen at the High Caliber Gun and Knife Show in Fort Worth. . . they 30.06 the crap out of Will Rogers when it's going on and have two police officers clearing all guns before they enter. Ironically, the last time I was there it was a dealer who fired a round.BigBlueDodge wrote:Go to any gun show, and it is VERY easy to get the CHL crowd to show themselves.
My DL picture is about ten years old and looks nothing like me. I'm probably 100 lbs. heavier now, have a beard, wear glasses, and don't buzz my head. . . so I've had a few people inspect the DL and ask for another form of ID. I usually chuckle, say something about what 10 years can do to you, and show the CHL. Only had a couple of people comment on it - usually something funny like, "I will now carefully place your merchandise into the sack and avoid making you upset for any reason." A couple have asked me how to go about getting theirs.
Of course, I'll never tell them if I'm carrying or not, but I don't think it's a negative if more people become comfortable with the thought of responsible, regular-looking citizens walking around with CHLs. . . it makes us seem like less of a fringe group of people and more like a mainstream what's-the-big-deal crowd.

She asked if you had a CHL? That seems odd considering the percentage of the population that does.elwood blooz wrote:I opened a P.O. box and had to have a 2nd ID. Pretty much, its buried in my wallet, underneath my drivers license. I've only had to produce it once during a traffic stop (result - warning) and have never used it as an ID. One time I left my DL on my photocopier and went to DFW... whre I realized that I had done a really dumb thing. I BRIEFLY considered using my CHL to go through SA Security, and then elected to use my Military ID (much better idea, in retrospect). But, if it was all I had, I'd use it.

Yes - Once, when applying for a library card.
I had my DL and a credit card with my photo. The credit card was found unacceptable.
My CHL was acceptable and the librarian quietly told me she and her husband were very interested in getting theirs and how does one go about obtaining one, etc.
I very happily filled her in...

I once showed mine to a hotel bartender in New York state because he couldn't believe The State of Texas would allow such a horrific thing.

I'm waiting for mine to come.
I don't normally carry any pic ID beyond my DL so if asked for my "2nd ID", I'll show them my CHL.
BTW, has any consideration been given to having the CHL be shown on your DL instead of carring another card? When you get your CHL, it could come as a replacement to the DL with an extra notation. Might also make sense to have them expire at the same time. And while I'm at it, how about letting the local DPS office renew them when you renew the DL.
OK, perhaps I went too far with that last bit but, you get the idea.

I don't know that I would like having my CHL status on my DL. I don't need the clerk at 7-11 knowing/getting freaked out at the subject.Paddler112 wrote:I'm waiting for mine to come.

OTOH, it would make traffic stops easier.

Actually, if I have some fun with the idea . . . . How about you get to have your ID picture made with your gun showing in it. That should give the clerks good pause.atxgun wrote:I don't know that I would like having my CHL status on my DL. Picture would get denied for obscuring your face.Paddler112 wrote:Actually, if I have some fun with the idea . . . . How about you get to have your ID picture made with your gun showing in it. That should give the clerks good pause.
Re: Have/Would you ever use your CHL as a genearl purpose ID?
I am curious...why not? Is this a "covert strategy," i.e. you don't want people to know you have one, so you personally don't consider it as an option, or do you not think it meets some objective definition of "ID?" The two have more identifying data elements in common than they do differences. I would not use my CHL as a first choice ID, but I wouldn't be afraid to use it as an ID.jimlongley wrote:No, because I don't consider it 'ID'.

I work at IAH and know that TSA will not, under any circumstances, accept a CHL as a form of ID.

One would think there would be TSA policies regardless of the airport. But then again I don't really know. Is there some kind of an airport TSA director that has some leeway with policies for his/her area?wright09 wrote:I work at IAH and know that TSA will not, under any circumstances, accept a CHL as a form of ID.

I've used mine as ID at security checkpoints at IAH, HOU, MEM, JAN, and SFO (that was fun) before. It's a gov't issued photo ID with name and address. They would not, however, accept a temporary TX DL with no picture.wright09 wrote:I work at IAH and know that TSA will not, under any circumstances, accept a CHL as a form of ID.
