Who offers revolver training?

I've looked at a few of the courses available in Texas, but it seems like everything beyond which end the bullets come out of requires a semiauto and a Batman utility belt covered with mags. I shoot semis, but I almost always carry a 5-shot snub, so I'd rather spend an hour of a one or two day class on faster speedloader and speedstrip techniques than on clearing stovepipes or double-feeds that don't happen with my carry gun.

Is there somebody here (preferably within a couple hours' drive of Stephenville, so mostly D/FW or Abilene) that offers such a class, or am I going to have to save up my nickels until I can afford a few hours of Jerry Miculek's time? Somebody planning to run a class at TacPro would be ideal, but one of my coworkers watches their calendar and hasn't seen anything along those lines coming up.

I am not aware of anyone that offers revolver specific training in the DFW area. As for reloading a 5 shot snub in a hurry, that would depend on your idea of fast. I can reload my J frame with a speedloader in what I would call a reasonable amount of time but fast, no. Speed strip? No. Whomever came up with the name Speed Strip, was delusional. I can load loose rounds from my pocket faster.

The fastest way to reload a 5 shot snubbie is to carry two 5 shot snubbies.

Well, with a Safariland loader carried readily accessible, I've gotten pretty quick. The main problem that I have is finding places to carry more than one reload where I can grab it quickly and still have everything concealed. If I can get my hand on it right away, and get good ejection, it's about the same speed as reloading a semi when the mag fails to drop free.

IMO, the main advantage of a speed strip is having the right number of rounds properly oriented in one package. Dump pouches or even loops can be faster with a *lot* of practice, but the strip is more practical for concealment.

I've often wondered why no one has come up with a round equal to the .357Mag's ballistics, but specifically made for moon clips. Maybe someone could make a .327Mag equivalent that would give 8 or more shots in a concealable revolver along with positive ejection and fast reloads.

I'd suggest giving forum member and CHL instructor Greybeard a call at his Denton County Sports Association range in Argyle (Copper Canyon / Flower Mound area). He offers private instruction classes and is very capable of delivering what you're asking for.

Most advanced shooting classes can be taken with a revolver.

You may try checking with the local ICORE club or Steel Plate club. They may know a few people who know some tips, tricks and training. You could also try to hire someone from here: http://www.tdsa.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for one on one instruction.

Sorry for the slow reply. IMHO a snubby specific class is very benificial if that's what you normally carry. There are a couple of fellas that offer training classes specifically tailored for folks who carry a snubby. I posted about this a couple of years ago, to see if there was enough interest in hosing a class in Texas. Ed Lovett, Claude Werner, and Michael deBethencourt are the people I know of.

Mr. Lovette has only had classes in Memphis,TN that I know of.
Michael deBethencourt was scheduled for a class @ KR training last year.

He has a one day basic snubby class followed by a one day advanced snubby class. He even has a few DVD's available for snubby practice. I'd be willing to pursue that again if there was enough interest.

I don't know if there are any slots left open, but Clint Smith is teaching a few classes in Alvarado in January. One of them is a "Defensive Revolver" class. Here is a link to the information.

Here's the course outline for the Snubby class I'm working on. PM me if you are interested. I think we only need about 7 students to make a go of it.

Snub Nose Revolver Skills Development Course
This is a one-day skill building class for 5 shot snub revolvers. It emphasizes marksmanship development, gunhandling, and carry techniques.

Learning objectives for the class:

Make hits with the snub, not just noise,

reload the revolver efficiently and with confidence,

carry the revolver in a low profile way and practice deploying it,

shoot a state recognized Concealed Carry qualification course, and

learn appropriate practice techniques and drills to keep your skills up after the class is over.

Attendees will receive a training certificate sufficient for obtaining a Florida Non-Resident Concealed Weapon or Firearm License.

Equipment requirements: Eye and ear protection, revolver with belt holster, at least one speedloader. Optional but encouraged: Given the usual environments we carry snubs in, wear old business casual type clothing that you don't mind getting dirty/torn. Such personal comfort items as you feel you will need, e.g., hat, sunscreen, etc. I will provide water at the range.

Ammo requirements: 150 rounds of practice ammo; Wal-Mart White Box is fine, not +p defense ammunition. In addition, bring 10 rounds of the ammunition you keep for self defense purposes.

I attended a course with Steve Moses (Bluff Dale Firearms) where someone was using a revolver. They took the time to show how to do everything properly with the revolver too. That was neat for me too, because now I have a revolver, and remember a little bit!
