What do you use to secure your gun in your car?

#1

Post by Weg »

I am interested in knowing what other CHLer's use to secure their gun in their cars. My situation is, I can't carry in the office, so I leave my gun in my truck. I had recently bought one of those console vaults for my Silverado, which I really like. Only drawback is, it won't hold my G21, so I started carrying my PT140 which fits fine. I am now going to be driving a Honda and am looking for ideas. Thanks

There are several threads about gun vaults. I would suggest that you do a topic search and see if you can find your answers.

I have read such mixed reviews of the electronic locks, that I went with a v-line with the simplex lock. Works great. Would highly recommend it.

I, too, drive a Honda, and space is tight! Since any security device is only going to be as strong as the mechanism that attaches it to the vehicle, I'm not really sold on the need for "securing" the gun under lock and key, as a motivated B.G. will simply use whatever force is necessary if they want something badly enough. I would rather find a suitable place that permits quick access without obvious telltales to a B.G. that's threatening me (remember, the moron that shot the woman in the face at NorthPark mall testified that he thought she was going for a gun). Sort of the same principle that one uses when hiding a "kill" switch on a vehicle.

For my Kahr CW9, some candidate hiding places I've found:

1. The center console (the one just below the A/C controls). With some Dremel work, a CW9 will fit nicely inside this box...with an appropriate holster, it would be quick access.

2. Up underneath the dash.

3. The door pocket.

Anything that's shaped like a box (i.e., a gun vault) will be hard to hide, and even more difficult to access. And if you can't access your piece quickly, you might as well not even carry it.

What year, model and trim level is your truck. I was just looking at the console vault site and even though some of the Chevy models have much smaller console storage compartments than others, looking at those photos, even the smallest should hold a GLOCK 21. :confused5

In your opinion, how determined would a thief have to be to get one of those safes out, attached by the cable to some very sturdy part of the vehicle (seat strut, underdash frame, etc.)? I've had cars and trucks broken into 5 times since 2000, so for me it's not a matter of "if" my vehicle gets broken into, but "when"!

IMO, the cables it comes with and a simple bolt cutter could cut them. I suggest it be bolted down, unless you are using it in multiple cars. Anyways, any determined thief will get what they want, unless it is a smash and grab.

If they're determined they can take the whole car and get into any safe. The COM box might stop smash and grab thieves but the cable can be cut with the pliers on a leatherman so it's pretty weak security.

Then short of bolting this down, one might as well just hide their piece and hope for the best...
