Book Review - Enemies Foreign and Domestic

Enemies Foreign and Domestic by Matthew Bracken

This non-fiction novel published by Steelcutter Publishing details the trials and tribulations of the characters as a result of a mass shooting and subsequent banning of all semi-automatic weapons. What a stretch.

The novel’s hero is Brad Fallon, retired oil field trash trying to restore a racing yacht to escape the USA that is deteriorating under democrat rule, not government. The deteriorating conditions are worsened by a runaway BATFE whose main focus is to eliminate FFLs through intimidation and illegal prosecution. Their ultimate goal is the total confiscation of all firearms and placing of all subversive domestic terorists into retraining camps. Like that would ever happen.

One such FFL is the father of Ranya Bardiwell, the novel’s heroine and ultimately Brad’s main squeeze. Ranya’s father is murdered by “unknown individuals who are in reality rogue BATFE SWAT types seeking to essentially make America into a disarmed society. Wow. That’s another stretch.

An underground resistance develops with uncoordinated attacks on infrastructure as well as certain government agencies in an attempt to prevent the fall of America. Another stretch that the author took extreme license with was the government’s loose interpretation of elements of the patriot act, GCA of 1968, and subsequent firearms legislation enacted by congress and …more stretching…presidential directive/executive order.

Brad and Ranya working with other patriots (domestic terrorists) do their best to thwart the rogue BATFE agents and uncover the conspiracy.

I will not spoil any more for you. I really liked the book and was amazed at the way the author developed the unlikely ***giglesnort** scenario of a runaway BATFE under democrat rule. I think the novel would work well with a GOP president given the current crop of candidates, but that is just my opinion.

The book is first of a trilogy promised by Mr. Bracken. I will post my review of his second installment at a later date. The third novel has not been published and we might want to ask the BATFE why. Just kidding. You can google the title. I have mine in my bookcase. It is a good read. Some of the book, even though fiction, could provide food for thought in the near future, say the next four years.

I've had this one on my shelf for some time. I'll have to move it into the foreground to get it read.

It's an interesting story and might make a good movie or miniseries with the right screenwriter. However the book suffers because of the author's writing skills. Plotting and character development both need some work. It could really benefit from a heavy handed editor or maybe a ghost writer. I give it a C+

I've know the author for years...Helped proof his follow-up project, sans the need for additional editorial support...We kept Matt straight on the story and how it flowed...He's a good guy and a champion of the cause...

artistic liberties aside I really enjoyed this book and some of the scenarios don't really seem so far fetched given present day activities and circumstances.parts of it bogged me down but overall it's a decent read and should get the thought processes going for the "ostrich's" out there. :cheers2:

Kinda interesting how this story could turn a little too real for us, now that the stage is set with the right (wrong) people...

BTW, Matt participates in another political forum some of you may be familiar with...Free Republic...Thats where I got to know him...He now lives in Florida, and is continuing writing that third installment to this series...

It's not going to let you down if you follow the whole thing...
