Got myself an AK

#1

Post by pbwalker »

I had posted a WTB in the Classifieds yesterday (on the board here) but realized time was of the essence. So I found a local shop (Powderhorn in San Antonio - Highly recommended) and picked up a WASR 10 AK-47. Yeah, AK's are kind of 'junk', but what a cool weapon. I can't wait to take it to the range. I just didn't have the funds for a Yugo or Bulgarian variant, but this'll do. :)

Any recommendations on add-on's or extras I should look for?

Pictures will be coming when I get home tonight. I've got to go to my Dave Ramsey class tonight (oh the irony). "rlol"

To whet appetites, here is a picture of what I have (albeit not mine)

And yes, it has gone beyond addiction. I'm loving it.

Enjoy it, they are fun guns. I bought one last month when Classic Arms (http://www.classicarms.us" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) had their WASR's on sale for only $350. I just wish I had bought more ammo from Academy when it was on sale last week.

I don't think AK's are kinda junk. They are not the prom queen the AR is; they are more the biker chick.

Get you some extra mags from Copes, AIM etc, 20 or 30 rounders, NOT the American made ones. http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Bulg ... azine.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The "best" AK mag (7.62x39) is the Bulgarian "Waffle" mag. They're about $25 compared to 10-12 $ for the steel mags.

Sling- The Blue Force Gear UDC sling with the long sling loop is a good one. The Tactical Tailor Urban Ops sling is nice also.

XS makes some nice night sights.

I'm thinking of picking up an AK myself. I know NOTHING about them. Can someone give the Cliff Notes version of what to look for or stay away from?

They are ugly but the ammo is cheaper than 5.56 ammo and they will eat any kind of ammo from what I have been told.

I took this picture at the ranch. It's a Vector Arms under-folder. I had just popped some turtles out at our pond with it. I used Monarch ammo I bought at Academy for cheap and it seems to function and shoot well with their rounds.

I live in Houston. Anyone recommend a place to shop for these, or are they best acquired at a Gun Show?

Pretty much everything you could ever want to know about AKs can be found here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/board.html?b=4

The average AK is reliable as a brick. By all means get one while you can. I regret not having jumped at my first opportunity in the mid 80s when the gun dealer was offering brand new AKs with a bunch of mags and 1,000 rounds for ~$200.

They're reliable, durable, fun to shoot and the ammo's cheaper than most other centerfire rounds. You can shoot hundreds of rounds through one without cleaning it, without a problem. I personally knew a guy who did this in a monthly IPSC-style rifle match in South Florida.

I love mine too! I got mine for $400 within the past 6 months and enjoy it when I get to shoot it. It is a Maadi factory gun and had the scope on it when I aquired it. I told a coworker who is a gun fanatic and well conected to keep an eye out for me a decent one (I didn't want the cheap ones I was finding at the shows). Voila he found one for me! Now I need to find a 100 round drum mag for it!
