THe Newest DPS Excuse
My wife got a letter from DPS today stating that her CHL is being delayed due to hurricane "IKE". What a great excuse for an already backed up system.
Wonder if the excuse will be good for years like all the Katrina excuses.
I guess she will just wait like most others.

Yeah, Ike really did a number on Austin, didn't it? Austin took it almost as bad as El Paso.

I think FEMA should give $2,000 to CHL applicants for their distress just like in Katrina!

Just curious, but are any of your wife's references in counties affect by Ike?jpierce30 wrote:My wife got a letter from DPS today stating that her CHL is being delayed due to hurricane "IKE". What a great excuse for an already backed up system.

Yup, I don't think they thought about that.
Spartans ask not how many, but where!
Re: THe Newest DPS Excuse
this wait problem seems to be betting worse though, I thought they hired a bunch of new processors. Im only 44 days into my wait, 1/3rd of the wait time.
How many applications do you think they process a day? 2 or 3 ?

Re: THe Newest DPS Excuse
We are in Galveston County. The jest of the letter made it seem that the entire DPS orginazation had been shifted to support of the "IKE" recovery.
I do wonder if any one out of the zone got the same letter???

Re: THe Newest DPS Excuse
Yep...my son. His cities of origin at the time of his class were...Austin and Plano. He took the class at Shiloh in Houston. He lived here at the time and took the class while down there. He lives there now, but they don't know that yet. he didn't want to change his address and give them an excuse to start the process all over again. His plan was to do the change of address at the same time he changes his DL and after his permit is issued. I guess since he took the class in the Houston area, they run a check there by default. I think he went through El Paso once. Maybe they should check there also.
I think it is just another weak excuse so they don't make the wait averages worse than they already are.

Re: THe Newest DPS Excuse
Lots of PD's are sending any "extra" officers to areas affected by Ike to still help keep the peace, help with clean up, help search for the missing (last I heard there are still some 400 people missing), and recovering bodies. That means that the people who would normally be doing background checks may be transferred to the coast to help out or covering shifts for someone else who is. Ike came ashore in a very populous area, so that area needs help (in all facets) to get back on its feet. All of the police officers I know are the absolute last people on earth to refuse to help. I know it is a pain. I know it is frustrating. But that's the way things are right now.
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Took the CHL class in mid April (mailed packet mid April also)...got license in hand...YESTERDAY! I think Ike is just their most recent excuse for being lazy.

FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.
Re: THe Newest DPS Excuse
I don't think it's laziness causing the problem. I get the impression it's more an issue of the system being overtaxed and probably has suffered from poor management. That may change now that the top guy at DPS has resigned. We can only hope.XtremeDuty.45 wrote:Took the CHL class in mid April (mailed packet mid April also)...got license in hand...YESTERDAY! I think the legislature can do things to help the situation. A couple of suggestions:
1. Do what Utah does. After the statutory time period elapses, issue a provisional license if all the investigations are not back.
2. Find a way to allow the applicants to obtain certified documents showing a clean record for the counties they live and work in. DPS could then accept those and bypass the field investigation if no other flags get raised. FBI check would still be done as well as Austin doing it's computerized searches.
3. Allow electronic submission of FAST fingerprints. That may cut down on the number of bad finger print submissions.
Re: THe Newest DPS Excuse
Its not about being a crybaby. I know how long it takes to get a background check and all that. It takes a hot minute. But I am telling you it does NOT take 6 months. There is no reason that it should take that long. We pay our money to get the license and the local government needs to do their job in a timely manner. I know how some, NOT all, but some of them work and its like they dont have a care in the world and could care less about production in the workplace. Patience is a virtue but when we pay good money for something we expect to get it in a timely manner. Not half a year later.

Re: THe Newest DPS Excuse
txflyer,
If I am not mistaken they are trying to get the electronic fingerprints to be more common. I agree with you that would really help. As for the certified documents. I work for the government and I have ahd a few background checks done on me. The FBI has interviewd me, my family, friends and neighbors. So as for getting documents to them Im not so sure that would help as I have everything they need for the last 10-15 years. For me and others like me all they needed to do was a quick search and they would have found ALL of my info. So if they cant even do a quick search for government employees Im not so sure that people without a previous background check sending in papers would really solve anything. Its a great idea and in theory should work alot smoother.

Re: THe Newest DPS Excuse
what about all the other people in line, saying the exact same thing, are their requests not important?XtremeDuty.45 wrote:Its not about being a crybaby.
doesn't seem to take a whole lot longer than when I got mine, couple o' years ago.
