Ready to take my CHL course, any recommendations?
I live in Mesquite and prefer to take one near or around Mesquite/Garland. But if need be I will go a little further. I was told of one great place to go:Texas Defensive Shooting Academy. I would like to take a class that is somewhat small so there is more focus. Thanks for the help

I took mine at The Bullet Trap in Plano. It was excellent.TexasGlock23 wrote:I live in Mesquite and prefer to take one near or around Mesquite/Garland. But if need be I will go a little further. I also believe one of the members of this forum teaches a class at DFW Gun, in Dallas, near Love Field.
I also think Targetmasters in Garland does a class, but I have heard nothing good or bad about it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I live about 10 minutes from TargetMaster, but I do not like their service. So I will decline the offer for them. Thanks for the heads up on the BulletTrap. What was the cost? I saw somewhere that it was around $240 total. I assumed all you had to pay was the cost of the course.

If you can make it this weekend, my father is teaching the intial CHL class here at DFW Gun Range. He has been instructing since the CHL program began, and does a pretty good job, if I do say so myself.TexasGlock23 wrote:Thanks for the quick reply. Your investment is only $120, and we do your fingerprints, notarize your documents, and take your photos.

And I knew about the revolver deal also, that is why I chose to buy my girlfriend the CS9 instead. What days are the classes at DFW, and where is it? Keep the comments comming. This is the reason why I love this site.

So when do you want to meet up and go shoot? I normally go to Gibson's ever Sunday or Monday. Those are my only days off! Thanks for the quick replys!comsec wrote:TexasGlock23,
Welcome to the forum! TXInvestigator has an exemplary course and I can also recommend the Bullet Trap in Plano as that was where I attended.
I also live in Mesquite and find the drive to either of those ranges worth the time and gas.![]()

Bullet trap is $120 for the class. The class should include everything except the fee you need to pay for your CHL. (Fingerprints, range test and might even include range rental and ammo, but i'm not sure.)
It's also where I shoot most Tuesdays.

Go with either DFW Gun's class, or Bullet Traps; you won't go wrong with either.

Cost for the CHL itself is $140 for a first-time CHL. There are discounts of 50% for indigents, senior citizens (60+), and members of the armed forces.
So, $120 was quoted for a class that includes pictures, notary, and fingerprinting, plus $140 for the license itself equals $260. I live far south of you, and my class was $75, pictures at Walgreens were $8.24, my bank did the notarizing for free, and the Walker County Sherrif's office did the fingerprinting for free. Total with license fee: $223.24. The convenience of not having to do all that running around would seriously make me consider the all-in-one class, but there isn't one offered within 50 miles of me (that I know of) which had a schedule I could handle.
All in all, a small price to pay for the safety and security of you and yours.
