Compassionate Policeman
Compassionate Policeman
I am not going to leave the Police Dept or the name of the Hospital because I do not want to cause any problems for any officer. Last week I had a spell with my heart. I remembered to take my 1911 off of my belt and have my wife put it away before the ambulance arrived. I forgot my S&W 340PD in my front pocket. Carried by ambulance to ER. Normal things and THEN "we must remove your clothes and place this gown on you." As the nurse went to remove my pants she felt the pistol Make a long story short Police called in. Police escorted my wife to our truck and safely stored the weapon. Heart surgery on Monday - Home on Thursday with no criminal trouble. I am thankful that there most of our officers have commone sense and are compassionate. The hosiptal is posted correctly. Not for sure if going in by ambulance protects me or not, but I am still a happy camper tonight

I believe the 1st 30 seconds of any LEO encounter sets the attitude for the rest of the visit. Good incident. Glad you are doing better as the hours pass. Your Lord Jesus grant you sleep that rest both body & mind.
Carry 24-7 or guess right.

First! Get better - glad you got everything checked out and are recovering comfotably.
Second - My only problem with this is that the hospital called the police. Why not a "hey, Mrs. Would you put this in the car?" But it sounds like the police handled it well since they were actually called and responded.

Glad your heart situation is under control and hope you are recovering quickly.
Hospitals will have procedures for most any scenario and I am sure written in some book somewhere is what to do if you find a gun on a patient. I am sure they were only following procedure. I am very pleased that the LEO escorted your wife to your truck and allowed her to secure it. It actually sounded like a thoughtful handling of a situation that might have been more embarrassing to the nursing personnel than the patient.
God bless you

I'm very sorry to hear of your visit to the hospital and especially the OR, but it sounds like things are going well now. Martha and I will be praying for you we will add you to the prayer list at church and as well.
As for the ambulance entrance, under the circumstances, I suspect it would be very difficult to prove you entered with a gun "intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly!"
Regards,
Chas.

All guns have at least two safeties. One's digital, one's cognitive. In other words - keep the digit off the trigger until ready to fire, and THINK. Some guns also have mechanical safeties on top of those. But if the first two don't work, the mechanical ones aren't guaranteed. - me

Very well said. It would seem as if it was handled well. I know that calling the police is procedure at my Mother's hospital. As least it didn't end up on the 10:00 news.GrannyGlock wrote:Glad your heart situation is under control and hope you are recovering quickly.

FLASH - An unconcious man used an ambulance to smuggle an automatic revolving assault hangun into the local hospital today. Nurses were terrified. And now, sports.
Prayers for a quick recovery.

Calling the police for a weapon will most certainly be procedure at most all hospitals if only for liablility. Some hospitals (Baylor, Parkland,Etc.) have there own Police also.
The ambulance crew will also have a similar procedure if they had come across it had you been incapacitated in any way. Our official procedure is that in absence of LEO we will remove and secure the weapon in a sealed gun case and hand over to LEO as soon as one arrives and we also have a form to fill out. If at a patient's house they are allowed to secure the weapon themselves if possible.

Absolutely its good that you are doing better...Thats a scary prospect to endure...
I know where your territory is up there, and most of the Law Enforcement up there are good troops...I am actually not surprised at how well they handled the situation...
You're health was top priority...The firearm issue to me would have been down around step #342...
I would not change the way, manner or frequency of your carry methods because of this incident...
I am really glad its working out for you...

Well, I hope all is well with the heart situation.
Also, good to hear that some overzealous officer didnt respond. Rules are rules, and in the wrong hands, you could have been made out to be some whacko with a gun in the hospital, even though we all understand the circumstances.
Kind of makes you think...
Lets say, its a middle of the night car accident and you are knocked out. Ambulance comes, load you up etc....Who is going to find the gun first and WHERE is it going to be when you are ready to come home?
