Indoor Range in Roanoke

Quail Creek is a range only in the loosest defintion of the word "range." The guys who work there are "interesting".... and the place is a pretty much a dump....

The range officers at Quail Creek behave as if they are guards at a prison camp - try having a conversation with one of them, unless your one of their "pals" all you will get is an annoyed look and a dismissive response.

It is a huge dissapointment for me that Tactical Edge Shooting Center didn't come to fruition, I dislike most of the ranges in the D/FW area as they are all run down, poorly maintained, in bad neighborhoods, etc.

That's interesting - every time I've been, the range officer(s) have been very kind, helping me with my grip, etc. One time he even let me shoot a couple of his guns (before I got one of my own) so I could see how they felt. I suppose being a girl helps, and they're definitely not over-the-top on the extroverted friendliness, but I've not seen any "gun man" act that way - just assumed it went with the hobby. Certainly there's no beating around the bush, but I appreciate that approach honestly.

We prefer it generally unless it's just too hot. I'm sorry everyone seems to have had bad experiences there ... The other options are either further than we'd like to drive on a regular basis, or apparently you walk out bleeding from your own shrapnel. Fun, fun.

Ok, I got all excited about Tactical Edge when it was "about to break ground" for over 6 months, then one of the guys murdered his brother and that was the end of that (besides being a couple hundred grand short on capital investment). That being said, Ill believe someone is building a range in Roanoke about as much as Ill believe that Exxon/Mobil is going to begin giving away gasoline tomorrow.

Where exactly is this supposed range to be constructed? Certainly not at 377 north of 170 where the other range was going to be, its an empty field that hasn't been touched in nearly a year. (I go by there daily during my commute) I would indeed be nice if this happens, as others have said Quail Creek is no longer an option and everything else is too far or too run down.

Yes, actually, it is North of 170 off 377. We will sit on corner of Henrietta Creek and 377 (West side). We will house 30 25 yard pistol lanes and 6 100 yard rifle lanes, video sim, and 400 sqft of classroom adjacent to the range. We also will manufacture a custom 1911 and M4. Again, if you don't wish to believe it ,stop in and see us. We have the drawings and elevations in the gunsmithing and manufacturing shop at the same location. You can ask for Dave or Jerry if you have questions.

I like to keep my rifles zeroed for 200 yards. In fact, for the bullet drop calculations to work on my scopes, the rifle has to be zeroed at 200 yards. At a 100 yard range, all I can do is aim at the bullseye, and try to zero my scopes so that the bullet impacts at the right height above the point of aim. That might be fine for hunting use where that difference is still well within minute of white tail, but for bench resting, it's pretty much useless.

Closest 200 yard ranges to you are at Gibson's Outpost in Mesquite. Most experienced shooters I know have always heard of this range but dont know where it is... If you know someone who shoots surplus rifles with fmj ammo and cant find anywhere to shoot in dfw tell them about this website/gun range.

As we begin construction, if you have thoughts that you think many would like to see incorporated into our indoor range, please let us know. We are trying to design / build this around shooters and LE, and would like to be tha way from day one. Any thoughts would always be appreciated...thanks in advance

Thanks. That is scary and we will have ballistic stalls between the lanes for safety.

Please let us know of any other ideas that will allow us to keep shooters happy.

I would love a couch. somewhere to sit either before shooting, or after shooting, like a waiting room. Nice TV with some Hunting DVD's or PDTV on it, OutDoor channel, sumpin' like that. water fountain, coke machine, snack machine.
doesn't have to be a "lounge" or have a "country club" feel, just somewhere to sit while waiting for a lane, class, or packing up gear, or while your GirlFriend, Wife, Husband, or Domestic Life Partner is shooting.

DFWGun has a nice little area. the BT has a small area, but usually sufficient. BassPro has NO waiting room (unless you count that big honkin' STORE attached to the range ).

As far as Quail Creek is concerned there was a personnel change early this summer and the regular mon-fri range officer is not the same person that others posted about early in this thread. Ron (the current mon-fri range officer) is very friendly and helpful to both males and females in my experience.

Here is what I would like to see in my version of the ideal range:

Well maintained facilites with excellent ventilation systems.

Lanes with adjustable target holders that actually function(all the time).

Bullet proof partitions between the lanes.

Range officers who are aware when Johnny Heehaw comes in to show off his new .50 cal revolver to his g/f and correct his unsafe behavior in a timely manner.

Freindly employees who dont mind answering questions, even if they have answered it 50, 000 times in the past.

Fair pricing on ammo.

The ability for CHL holders to draw from concealed and fire. (I've yet to find this anywhere in the D/FW area without having to join a private club or IDPA, going to Tac-Pro Shooting Center in Mingus TX on Sunday to hopefully rectify this dilema)

A wide selection of guns available for rent.

Shotguns shotguns shotguns!!!!!! Another area that is lacking in DFW is the ability to use shotguns. My wife would love to operate a shotgun with live ammo and has yet to do so because no one allows anything but slugs unless shooting skeet or trap,which she cant do because of her size - does 00 buck really tear up the backstops that bad ?

Jason73, you can use shotguns at Alpine, the slugs and buckshot (I think) are on the 50-yard range, and then the 30yd has the patterning range.

The ventilation will be light years ahead of OSHA and EPA requirements. There will be no reputation for us out there as being "dirty." We will have a lounge, just not certain as to the extent just yet. Bulletproof partitions are already on order. The shotgun issue s one we are looking into....I am talking with FBI and NRA about their research regarding shotgun indoors.

Any other thoughts, please let us know. Or stop in to see what we are doing.
