Do you own or use a gun safe for your car?
I am considering buying a gun safe for my car for those times when I CANNOT carry. How many of you out there use one currently or do you just toss your gun in the glove box, under the seat, or in some other hidey hole? I searched on the boards here but didn't find much in the way of answers.

i bought a couple of the center-of-mass steel boxes with the cable. they seem to work alright.
Re: Do you own or use a gun safe for your car?
Same here, I bought the same type of case at Cabelas. My normal carry is a pocket pistol, but I like to keep something a little larger in the vehicle. I keep them in the trunk, and under the seat of the pickup. I use the cable attachments.
Two suggestions:
1 - Just buy the large size. The large size holds a 1911, a P3AT, and spare mags for both.
2 - Get them from COM and they will key them alike for no charge. I wish I'd done that, and the price is the same. I guess I could take all of mine to a locksmith and fix that, for $10 each.
What I do is keep the key for the lockbox on the same ring with the ignition key, for each of 3 vehicles.

So far I have not purchased a safe or cable lock for my car though it seems like a good idea. You could at least say you tried to secure it however if they steal the car they have all the time in the world anyway. Currently I just stow it away hidden from view.

I don't have a safe for the vehicle, and would not be able to mount one anyway.
I just chuck the pistola(s) under the driver side floor board mat. I drive a car and the mat is easy to reach and inconspicuous.

I have a hiding place that's not seen unless you take stuff apart. To me, a gun safe in the car is like putting a big arrow pointing at the valuable stuff. Unless the burglar is there for a smash and grab, he/she will likely look under the seats. Now he'll ruin your seat bracket to jack the safe.

The only time I leave my pistol in the car is when I go into the post office to check my PO box. Then I just lock it in the center console for the 1 minute I'm inside. That being said, one of those under the seat safes will probably be one of my next gun related purchases, for the "just in case" times.

Re: Do you own or use a gun safe for your car?
I use one in my truck, bolted to the hump in the passenger area of my extended cab truck. I had to have one in Ohio. Handguns had to be locked in a container when not on your person.
Now that I am back in a free state, I have my spare .45 and my spare cash in there. I have my carry on me at all times (except when at the water park) and a PF9 in the center console at all times.
I like it being there, I view it as an additional layer of protection that keeps someone from grabbing one of my good pistols if they break in quickly.
If it was not for it being required in Ohio, I probably would not have it.

Re: Do you own or use a gun safe for your car?
There is a thread on this page that was started a year ago. I have a description and pictures posted of my safe setup for my van on page 2 of that thread (yes, it was a mess when I took the pics).

For my current daily driver (A late-80s Volvo 244 DL), I lock my guns up in the trunk. There is no trunk release in the vehicle, and it can only be opened with a key. I have purchased a cheap floor safe from Harbor Freight (it was super cheap at one of their sidewalk sales), and it appears to be more secure than your run-of-the-mill car gun safes. There is a perfect place for the safe in the trunk area, underneath the back speakers, and I just need to get the time to fix it there with bolts.
Here's the safe I got:

It's quite large, and with some proper padding would accommodate several pistols. as well as small valuables or a purse.

I have a Secure Vault mounted under the backseat of my truck. It is fairly easy to get to, but still hidden from view. This keeps the smash-n-grabbers from breaking a window to get the safe.
The safe is mounted to the floor of the truck with self tapping bolts, and seems fairly well mounted.

I have a small key lock box mounted between the seats in my truck. Use it when I HAVE to disarm. Not often where I am. It is not a real Thief stopper but a good deterrent on a parking lot due to time required. Wont be a snatch & grab.
Carry 24-7 or guess right.

I just got a Console Vault for my truck. You order them my make and model of your truck and they drop and bolt in to the existing console. So far I really like it. Even if I don't have to put my gun in it it's great for putting my MP3 player,GPS or other stuff so they are not laying out in the open. You can get them with either a key or combination lock.

The COM works great in my truck. I have in mounts in the rear of my extended cab truck. I used the cable and also bolted it solid. Them I also have an extra COM for those times that I might need to use it in a different vehicle.

Re: Do you own or use a gun safe for your car?
I have no room for a car safe but I think any place that prohibits guns is ethically responsible for the safety of me and my gun when they won't let me carry it.
