SOLD - FS Springfield 1903a3

Post by drake »

I know this is primarily a pistol site, hence why you don't see many long guns FS here. But I figure I would give a chance to someone that might be interested in purchasing this item:

I have for sale a Springfield 1903a3, all original Remington parts, with barrel date back 1943. This is a CMP buy back rifle, have certificate as proof. I am only the second owner, I never shot this rifle and the previous owner shot <20 rounds. The barrel is in excellent shape for its age!

Below is several pictures of the rifle:

wow. i'd say what I think of that but it would violate our 10-year-old rule.

that's a nice rifle. Should be in a museum.

With all due respect, LJ, museums have enough 1903s.

It belongs with someone who will care for it and take it to the range and use it to show to tomorrow's shooters and gun collectors. I wish I were such a person. This rifle would probably do well in the iron sights only military rifle bench shoots that were held monthly at a club I belonged to in Colorado.

This is a rifle for sharing, for handling with care and for preserving the heritage. It hasn't had the butchering done to the 03 that I picked up, sporterized some time in the 1950s. Nice stock, good rifle, but not the treasure that the above rifle is.

I appreciate all the kind words about this 03a3, I would hope that it goes to a good home and not to a museum. I believe it should be used and shown off, which I am unable to do so myself.

Do you have any interest in trades? Partial trades?

The muzzle wear looks good.

Have you been able to take a throat erosion measurement?

I don't have a gage for '03.

WOW!!!

I dind't realize that the prices had gotten so high.

When I was a kid, I bought a DCM (predecessor to CMP) 03-A3 for the princely sum of $19.00 and I still have it. I used it to compete in high power matches out to 1000 yards and it always did its job when I did mine. I managed to place as high as fifth regionally in matches at Forbes rifle club way back then, and even won a local 300 yard stage once when the best shooter in the club didn't show for the match.

A few years ago I took my faithful Springfield to a Garand qualification match, I didn't need to, I was qualified several times over, I just like shooting it. I beat many of the Garand shooters in the match despite having to work the action and reload after only five rounds. After the rapid fire stage I turned and looked at my spotter to see how I did and he was just sitting there shaking his head in amazement, while not being the most accurate on the stage, I had fired the alloted number of rounds within the time limit and they were all on target.

Mine is also all original Remington, with a 3/43 barrel date, it's had a lot of rounds through it (I could look up a very close count if I could find my record books) but it still shoots as well as it ever did.

I would like to consider trades, but unfortunately I need the cash instead.

As far as throat erosion, I do not have the gauge to measure the wear. I imagine its is in the same same shape as the muzzle if not better, but do not know 100% w/o the gauge and I based my conclusion on the # of rounds that I known has been fired through the barrel.
