Comp-Tac Minotaur MTAC Holster Review - 1yr Update

Three days after placing the order I had my holster. (And I've been comfortably wearing it since last Thursday). Here are a few pics:

Wildscar, thank you for posting your review of this holster, it made me decide to purchase one and I am absolutely in love with it!

I received my Comp-Tac Minotaur MTAC Holster today and I must say, this holster is absolutely incredible! It is virtually impossible to tell Im carrying a pistol, it doesnt print at all. I had to adjust the cant on it because the grip stuck out a bit when I first put it on, but that was as simple as taking out an allen screw, moving the belt clip 2 holes, and screwing the allen screw back in. And there is still room to adjust the cant even more if I wanted. I tried it with a t-shirt, polo shirt, and a tucked in dress shirt. None of them showed even the slightest outline of the pistol.

Ive had it on for almost 12 hours now and I really dont even notice it unless I think about it. This holster is a dream compared to the Fobus paddle holster I used to wear. I dont even know its there. Tension was perfect out of the box. I saw someone else said their gun would fall out if the holster was upside down so I tried with mine and it stayed put. No problems drawing, initially I had a bit of trouble reholstering but I think thats because I was used to my Fobus. Now that I've practiced a bit I can do it smoothly with no trouble.

I ordered it on 2/13, received a confirmation email that said it would take a week in production on the 14th. Checked my mail this morning and there it was - 3 days from order to my mailbox! They put candy in with it along with a hand written note thanking me for my business. The folks at Comp-Tac definitely know a thing or two about excellent customer service!

I bought mine with the stock clips. I failed to measure my gun belt when I ordered the holster and its too wide, but with my regular $20 dollar Walmart belt it stays put just fine.

If you are looking for a great holster thats comfortable and you can wear with just about anything the Minotaur MTAC is definitely the way to go!

Update to previous review:

I loved my holster back in Feb when I got it and I still love it now, however I am having a slight issue now that its hot out: When Im wearing it while doing any physical activity outside I have noticed that the sweat soaks into the leather and condensates on the side of the slide. Not that big a deal just means a daily cleaning but it would be nice if there were some sort of liner on the inside of the holster to prevent this. Other than that minor issue its still a great holster and well worth the money. If anyone has suggestions on resolving this please let me know.

I loved my holster back in Feb when I got it and I still love it now, however I am having a slight issue now that its hot out: When Im wearing it while doing any physical activity outside I have noticed that the sweat soaks into the leather and condensates on the side of the slide. Not that big a deal just means a daily cleaning but it would be nice if there were some sort of liner on the inside of the holster to prevent this. Other than that minor issue its still a great holster and well worth the money. If anyone has suggestions on resolving this please let me know.

Don't know if it'll help but one thought is to try applying some natural color shoe polish to the backside. Maybe it'll help make it a little moisture resistant.

Wow, that's odd. I don't know for sure, but they do have some less common models on there. I guess the only way to know for sure is to email them. It may be that it closely resembles another model they have, so you would just order that one and conceal away. They may also be able to custom mold one, if all else fails.

Just a thought but how about sealing it with some beeswax or leather waterproofing?

I think there are some holsters that have an optional moisture barrier. I'd hesitate to add anything like beeswax or shoe polish to one. There is a better than average chance you'll have problems with transfer... either onto your gun, or your self/clothing.

I was thinking about spraying the waterproofing on the side of holster that rests against your body. not anywhere near the firearm. Just an idea though.

This is the best reason to seek out a horsehide holster. Horsehide is much better at resisting moisture. It's also thinner.

I have been using three of the minotaur's, one for my compact commander and champions (1911's), and two for XD's (summer carry) since February. This summer, I've have mainly been carrying an XD45 compact...plastic gun, lots of sweat, plus it can be broken down and cleaned in 1/3 the time it takes to clean 1911s. I don't like to let it go until the logo turns white from salt residue before cleaning .

I got the slider version, it'll handle any of the XD series. So, if need be, an XDsc, or other XD option.

With two holsters for my XDs, I have one set up with "c" clips for a 1.5" belt, and the other for a 1.75" belt width. I highly recommend the "c" clips with a good stiff belt. Some of the Bianchi (sp?), Beltman, Comp-tac, etc. belts are fantastic, showing absolutely no wear or stretching after 6mos of constant wear with my .45's for 16 hours a day wear. I rotate between the holsters as needed, much like rotating shoes or boots. Smaller belt with dress pants, larger with jeans. A little more expensive, but very useful...like today, working in the garage all morning....soaked the holster, will swap and use the other to go out tonight. Actually, its already dry....no problem.

As for cleaning, saddle soap them as needed. Cleans and seals the leather fine.

I am totally satisfied with the holster. It conceals well in my tucked in shirt, is secure while standing, sitting, or with about every activity I have put it through. Two thumbs up from me. I just ordered two more week before last, they had them in my mailbox in about a week. Good folks.

Mink oil, those who have lived in the north have probably used it before. Go to Academy and buy some.
