Always check to see whats behind your target

Post by Daltex1 »

A long time ago me and my friends would go out to a place in wylie and shoot our guns, this was back when wylie was a very small town. We had shot their hundreds of times. As we are shooting probably 20-30 minutes of firing our guns, a guy comes pulling up in a car, we are surprised cause this was the middle of nowhere. He jumps out of his car and comes over to us and says that he is building a house on the other side of the woods and that he is hearing ricochets and kindly asked us to stop. We were mortified! We had shot here for ages! So the guy goes back to his car pops the trunck and pulls out a rifle and decides he will pop a few rounds with us before he leaves! So we shoot with the guy for awhile and we pack up and leave never to return to that spot. Granted I was only 18 at the time it is a reminder that I could have accidently killed that man and the way he handled almost being shot amazed me. Just remember what is behind your target! :fire

Amazed me too. I had to read that sentence about pulling a rifle from his car twice because i was wholeheartedly expecting a threat. "Wait... He shot WITH you, ok, I get it..." Man, that's one cool customer. Pity you lost your shootin' pit.

I do not understand -- if there was a proper backstop that you were shooting into, it would not have mattered that he was building back there because the shots would not have left your premises; if there was not a proper backstop, and your neighbor knew that the shots were leaving and was a potentially leathal situation, why did he shoot as well? Back in the day we considered a long enough range for the shotfall to not damage anything or anybody to be an adequate backstop - and there are still a couple of ranges around like that, nothing but woods for several miles beyond the target area, including the Jacob's Plain range where Collin County IDPA shoots.

A long time ago my brother, father, and I were shooting at my gun club when someone came popping out of the woods to the side of the range. The club also had hunting on the property and he had set his son up in a deer stand directly downrange from the target area, never anticipating that anyone would use the range for its intended purpose.

I can only imagine what you must have felt - because as I was reading it ...that's exactly what I was thinking he was going to do!

Just bought a house in Wylie, would be lucky if I could spit and not hit someone.

I completely agree with the other posters, thought he was going to show you the business end of his rifle.
