Kythas wrote:So I got in a fight with my girlfriend this weekend about carrying. She can't believe that, when I told her I was getting my CHL and told her I'd be carrying a gun, I meant that I'd really be carrying a gun.

She even went so far as to say she'd rather a BG kill her or me than have me kill someone in defense of her or my life. I brought up the shootings at VA Tech and the church in Colorado and mentioned that someone with a CHL at VA Tech (if it were legal to carry on campus) could have stopped the killer and saved many lives, much as the woman in Colorado did. She actually responded with "How do you know it wasn't their time to go and that's what was meant to happen?"

Arguments of mine that "How do you know if we're ever in that situation and I'm armed, it's not HIS time to go and I was meant to stop him?" fell on deaf ears.

Has anyone else ever had this "discussion" with your significant other?
Dump her. She would rather you die than a killer get hurt. She places them above you. Enough said.

Actually, this subject veers dangerously close to the "no religious debates" rule. Not because it's based on religion, but because that's how seriously some people take it.

OK .. briefly.

You can shoot someone to protect life. It's called self defence. Once the threat is over, i.e. the BG is running away, would you shoot him?

So if you wouldn't kill someone who has ceased to be a threat ten seconds ago and is running away, how is it OK to kill him ten years later when he's been inside a cell (and thus by definition not a threat to anyone)?

Not forgetting that we cannot derogate to the state, rights and powers which we do not have as individuals. If we can't kill except in self defence, then neither can the state.
I agree 99.9%. Not quite 100%, because I believe the death penalty is justified as punishment for certain crimes. I also believe that "beyond a reasonable doubt" is not nearly sufficient for the state to kill someone. "Beyond any doubt" should be the minimum standard for the death penalty. And since none of us are omnipotent, there will always be doubt. At least, there will always be doubt in the minds of anyone who isn't already pre-disposed to pull the trigger.

If anyone believes that everyone who is executed for a capital crime must have been guilty, I suggest looking at The Innocence Project. This is not a bunch of lefties trying to save the guilty from being executed; they're principled people trying to make sure that the wrongly-convicted are set free.

The number of wrongful convictions is shocking. The new Dallas DA, Craig Watkins, has actively sought to overturn convictions won by his predecessors, where exculpatory evidence was withheld from the defense. In some cases that evidence actually proved innocence.

Radly Balko has featured a number of stories about wrongful convictions. Many of them were based on downright fraudulent work by a medical examiner who would ask police what the cause of death was, before issuing his ruling. His office processed 2-3 times the maximum amount of autopsies allowed by the forensic licensing boards.

Let me make it clear: being opposed to the death penalty is NOT the same as thinking murders/rapists/child molesters should go free. I would rather any of the above go free, than an innocent man be put to death.

That story is so horrifying I almost vomited. I can hardly think straight I'm so upset after reading that. This is a case where the death penalty is too good for this worthless piece of garbage. Make him suffer. Something with ants or crows pecking the eyes might be appropriate. I better not go on or I'll get permanently banned from this site.

But that's just the problem: you don't 'kill them back'.

1,384 murders in Texas in 2006, and 53 executions in that same year (yes, I know that executions come almost ten years after the crime..).

It's plain that there are an awful lot of people killing and not being killed.

Not every murder is a capitol crime, not every capitol crime is found to be worthy of the death penalty. We reserve the the death penalty for the most heinous of criminals. We can debate the worthiness of who deserves the ultimate penalty, but the rules make it hard, as it should be.

Wow. This topic is still active?

Update: She is no longer my girlfriend. There were other incompatibility issues. I think the fact she was 25 and I'm 39 may have something to do with them.:

For those words to even come out of her mouth is strong evidence she has sail boat fuel for brains. Congrats on escaping that trap. I can see how someone who was not raised around guns may feel uneasy out of ignorance, but her statement told something totally different about her.

I always thought Texas implemented the death penalty in the fairest, most humane way. In Texas if you are sentenced to death, there is a pretty good chance you will actually get it. I have always thought something was wrong with having the death penalty, but only carrying it out once every 10 or 15 years. I'm for equal opportunity, and equal implementation.

The age difference is key. Your ex-girlfriend was brainwashed by the politically correct educational system.

Our grand-daughter has similar attitudes. She has already asked my wife not to "carry" at her wedding. Wife told her something like, "You know Grandpa will be carrying. If you ask him not to, he'll probably tell you to mind your own business."

I'm going to one of those good for nothing things you get schoolin' at, one of the most liberal parts of Fort Worth, one of the most conservative major schools out there. I'm just happy I don't live in Berkeley, I don't know if I could get that blasted piece of paper :rules: they call a degree, diploma, whatever it is!
