Hunting w/ military rifles
Anyone else hunt regular w/ your military rifle? Picture & comments.
I hunt w/ my SA M1A. Keep the battle sites on it. Am completely comfortable w/ it out to 175 yds. Would take the right shot at 200.
The battle sites definately cut down the hunting hours but I dont mind watching w/o having to shoot.

Carry 24-7 or guess right.

Re: Hunting w/ military rifles
LT, I hunt ALOT with my AR's: deer, hogs, rabbits, coyotes, even feral dog population control out at the pit. I've also hunted with an SKS, M1A (a personal favorite and on my wish list), a Mosin, and a Mauser. I love the old military rifles. I've got a friend who coyote hunts with a Sprinfield 30.06 quite often, but I don't remember the model number. He'd rather hunt with that than his newer .270. Have another friend who hunts coyote calling contests with his Mosin. I'll see if I can scrounge some pics of my friends guns. You've already seen my AR's.
When I was 18, a friend, his dad and I were hunting hogs on the Pecos River near Iraan. We both had SKS's and his dad had a .308 bolt rifle, I don't remember what it was. Jake and I came across a GIANT sow and boy, she didn't like us one bit. We hit her a few times, but she apparently didn't notice. Luckily, we were right by an old pump jack and we ran up the ladder! After a few more shots each, she finally went down. But Jake and I were so scared, we stayed up there for 15-20 minutes! His dad STILL laughs at us about that.

I have seen a few of the Mosens at the range & thought they would make some excellent open site hunting rifles.
Carry 24-7 or guess right.

Hit "submit" a few minutes ago accidently before I put down my little story. The Mosin's really do make a pretty good hunting rifle. You can even get pretty decent ammo for them, and even reloading stuff for the 7.62x54.

According to the guys on ARFCOM the .223 in vmax fragments right after it hits and shreds the deers lungs giving it insane stopping power for such a tiny and light round.
There is a pretty good long picture thread about deer taken with .223

Re: Hunting w/ military rifles
Took a northern Whitetail Deer in 1965 with my M1903-A3 Springfield (unmodified) near Greenville, NY, just east of Basic Creek. About 135 yards, with battle sights sighted point blank at 200 yards, held a little low and dropped him with one shot. Western Super X 180 grain Power Point .30-06.
I never took another deer with that rifle, but only because I never tried, but I did shoot a couple of woodchucks with it just for fun. I also used to shoot long range matches with that rifle and it never let me down.

I have hunted deer with my eagle arms AR10 .308 and my AR15 with a 7.62x39 upper,im kansas you couldn't hunt deer with less than a .243 so no shooting deer with the .223.The .308 is overkill at the ranges we shot at in kansas but the 7.62x39 124 grn soft point whacked them good.
It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end-to-end, someone would be stupid enough to try to pass them

Re: Hunting w/ military rifles
I haven't had the chance to use it for this yet, but I bought my Bushmaster Varminter specifically for hunting coyotes. It's the only "military" style rifle I own - unless you can count a Remington 700 VSF in .308 with a heavy fluted 26" barrel on an HS Precision stock as a military rifle. I have gone deer hunting with that one.
"Military" or not, that Remington makes for a dandy deer rifle out to almost any distance you have the optics for.

Re: Hunting w/ military rifles
The us armed forces have used the 700 as an official sniper rifle so I think that counts

Annoyed, that is a very cool rifle! And , it counts! My brother has the Remington 700 LTR and it's his deer rifle too. It's pretty darn close to the same rifle you have.

Re: Hunting w/ military rifles
I took my first deer as a kid with my dad's M-1 Carbine and I still use it today if I'm hunting in wooded areas where the range is short.
I guess my 700 BDL would count as well although it doesn't look all that scary.

stick a black skeleton stock on it and a bipod and you would have an "EVIL sniper rifle use for only killing innocent people" if you beleave the news media.
700 is a wonderful platform.

Re: Hunting w/ military rifles
i use a remy 700BDL .308. love it. shoots minute of nickel groups. i covered a three shot group with a nickel last time i sighted it. though i have heard people say they are inaccurate out of the box. mine belonged to my grandfather and it is still in pristine condition, and has fed the family many times...

I hunt with my HK91, it's a very accurate rifle even though the trigger is heavy. First time out, I got laughed at. But when the ranch manager decided he wanted to shoot it, you could see him shaking because for some reason he was very intimidated.
it's socially unacceptable to be ahead of your time.

I had a cetme as my first deer rifle. Friend who owned the land laughed at me until he got to shoot it... he ended up buying it off meiratollah wrote:I hunt with my HK91, it's a very accurate rifle even though the trigger is heavy.
