My wife person finally took her CHL class this past weekend. She had shown some interest for a while, but lacked confidence on her shooting and does not feel she takes "tests" well. I found a location where she could do it all in one trip so that she had it all concentrated and "got it over with" at one time. I had been taking her to the range and had her shooting about 100 rounds three times a month or so.
She shot 247 and scored 98% on the exam. She actually shot better than all but one guy in the class. She is more confident about the whole thing now. Packet has been sent to Austin. So, now we can add one more to the list of ladies carrying. (After her license comes back of course.)

The last time she went shooting, the guy at the range thought it'd be funny to give her a 45LC instead of the .45ACP she wanted, and she's convinced that she can't shoot anymore.

Still working on it, though. She's fascinated that I carry all the time now, and is constantly asking if I have "Clarice" with me.

She's also a teacher, and she's worried that someone will "find out" that she's got a CHL, and it'll affect her job adversely. Also working on THAT.

Sorry to hear about your fiancee's issue at the range. Unfortunately, some guys are just real jerks and get their jollies by intimidating new shooters, especially the ladies. Please try to convince her that she just happened to find the bad apple!

As far as teaching goes - my daughter is a first year teacher (8th grade ESL) with a CHL. I think that actually got her hired! The principal was quite impressed. Of course, she has to leave her firearm in her car, but they know that and are OK with it. Sometimes, when she has a bad day at school, I have to remind her that's why they don't allow guns in the classroom.

What range...sounds like a place I'll never go. Did you mention it to the manager???

It was a range in Milpitas, California right before we moved here. This *WAS* the manager, I believe.

I'm still working on her. Her folks are working on her, too, so eventually she'll feel better about it.

Before anyone gets a CHL they need to decide why they are getting it. If its just show and tell, then it doesn't take much but a little practice, a litle money and maybe a little "mouth."

If its for self defense, then the decision had better have been made that this is a duty and a responsibility. You must make the decision at the moment it needs to be made based on the factors at the time. If they are not ready to defend themselves, then give them time and space.

I made my decision years ago when I took Tae Kwon Do and decided I would do whatever I had to do to defend myself and family. It didn't take too long to decide that the odds were more in my favor if I didn't have to relie on just punches and kicks.

I agree 100%. For me, it was a gradual thing. I had an AZ permit mostly to just be able to keep it in my car, because I traveled all over the state.

When my fianceé moved in with me, thats when things began to change. When we were living in California, there were a few episodes that made me realise just how vulnerable we were. (When it was just me, it was one thing, but with my future wife, that was unacceptable!)

First, she was followed home by a carwith no license plate. When she called 911 on her cellphone, they told her they "couldn't do anything" because the car had no plate.

Second, she was getting home from work late, and I was away on a business trip. She saw someone sneaking around the stairs to our apartment. Of course, the police would be there "in a few hours."
She called a friend of mine to excort her up.

Add a couple more incidents like this, and it made me realise that, one, I have a duty to help protect my future wife and myself, and two, she's got a duty to help protect herself (and me!)

When a job opened up in Texas, we ran down here as fast as we could. The better gun laws were one in many big reasons for that move.

If it wasn't for her, I probably would not have been as gung-ho about it.

Welcome aboard Granny. You are the 2nd one on the forum from our city of origion that I am aware of. The wife & I both grew up there. Taking it for granted that you are a real granny & we are glad to have another lady on the forum. Welcome.

DPS website now shows her application as processed and certificate issued. Right at 60 days for the whole process. I expect that we will see her license arrive late this week.
By the way, I took my renewal class on Sunday. I will mail the packet tomorrow and start the clock on that one.
