An Act to Regulate the Keeping and Bearing of Deadly Weapons

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but it deals with a legislative session or two. I've become interested in how Penal Code Section A46.02 came to be and how it relates to "An Act to Regulate the Keeping and Bearing of Deadly Weapons of April 12, 1871".

Looking into the Penal Code it seems that the current iteration was adopted by and act in 1973 by the 63rd Legislature. What was the penal code before 1973 and how and why was it restructured in 1973? Also how different is the version of 46.02 compared to "An Act to Regulate the Keeping and Bearing of Deadly Weapons of April 12, 1871"? I've been searching but information isn't as forthcoming as I would have hoped.
