Hmmm, Senatorial District Convention...

#1

Post by stevie_d_64 »

Since I always tend to push the envelope in certain situations, but always covering my bases...

We are attending this Saturday's convention at Univ. of Houston (main campus)...And since this is not really a school function, we are only "leasing" (for our own purposes and rules, not for the school) out certain areas to convene and conduct our business...

I have always wondered if that may be an exception for us to be able to carry during those type of events??? (Important: I do not believe anything will happen, nor should I generate issues that would create a problem during the event)...

My first inclination is to not carry...I didn't during the last convention, because of obvious trepidations...

I will more than likely stow it in the "safe" secured in the vehicle (in the parking lot, which has been established as proper) anyway, but thought this might be another one of those things that make you think a bit...

In my opinion, its not really a meeting of a governmental body...Its a political party function...

And I know the arguments to "why do you need to carry in there?" issue...

My hypothisis is to discretely prove to the masses, that it is very likely "nothing will happen", and that we should be trusted just a bit more by our government in situations like this...

Maybe I am pushing it a bit, but I believe my intentions are clear, and I believe it is fair to discuss the theory...

Have at it...But be gentle, I bruise easily ;-)

Also, this was not totally my idea...Wife Unit brought it up and we discussed it and came up with the idea to post it here...

No carry on in university bldgs, that's per Texas A&M's UPD. I would assume that all UPD's are in the same boat though.

Stevie I also believe it would be realy pushing the envelope on the legallity business. Could be argued that w/ no metal detectors that the only way it would be found out is if you announce it. (no worry there). Or if you need it. :ack: Then we ar all on the same page. Better to say, "See there is a need," & hope to be no billed. My personal opinion & have stated it often. Folks have thought a moment then said, Huuumm, you may be right. Schools & churches have been the target of shootings where BG's want to be unhendered in their work of evil. It is getting more known that there are people in a lot of churches that are armed. I think the next 2 places the BG's will start on because they perceive them as places where "No one will be armed" is funeral homes & conservative political party meetings. They will never shoot up the Dems. They are the fellons friend. I know that most of us carry anytime we are at the funeral home for family visit or the funeral service. I have in 33 yr of ministry been at 2 funerals that I was glad I was armed at. Several threats. Both of them were murder victims. A 3rd one before CHL that I requested officers to attend & gave the evidence as to why. They sent ONE officer & he stayed outside the church, then stood on a hill about 150 yd from the graveside at the burial. Hope you don't need one there.

Steve:
If the convention is held inside a U/H building, you can't carry. TPC §46.03(a)(1) prohibits all firearms on the "premises" of a school, as "premise" is defined, and the prohibition applies whether or not school activities are occurring in the building.

The only time ongoing activities becomes an issue is when we are dealing with school grounds rather than buildings. See the statute below.

Regards,
Chas.

§ 46.03. PLACES WEAPONS PROHIBITED. (a) A person commits
an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly
possesses or goes with a firearm, illegal knife, club, or
prohibited weapon listed in Section 46.05(a):

(1) on the physical premises of a school or
educational institution, any grounds or building on which an
activity
sponsored by a school or educational institution is being
conducted
, or a passenger transportation vehicle of a school or
educational institution, whether the school or educational
institution is public or private, unless pursuant to written
regulations or written authorization of the institution;

Yep...

Thats why I'm going to stow it while we're there again...This time it'll be a little more secure...

See...Better to push the envelope here, than wait and test the case...

I just thought the whole temporary lease thing might be exploitable for some reason...

Can't blame me for looking...

Thats what bothers me...slightly...

Other people (even those who would agree with us) don't even think about it...

Maybe I think too much...

You don't thnk too much. It is better to think of it before it happens. Also I have found the when you are mentally prepared for all the happenings that you can think of, when one you have not thought of HAPPENS the response is usually better & more immediate. Why? Because your mind is trained to RESPOND.

Stowing the gun in your car seems the best course of action given the current laws.

Having said that, UH Main Campus isn't in exactly the most pleasent of neighborhoods. There is no way I would go down there unarmed, especially after dark.

I wouldn't even think about driving thru the drive thru at that Burger King across the street over there...

I have never seen so much loitering around in that parking lot with all the pimped out SUV's now with the spinner 20 inch rimmed out vehicles...Loud music, etc etc...

I was thinking about on a dare to drive thru with some Glen Campbell playing in the CD, with all the windows down...

Just to see what would happen...

Thanks for asking the question, Stevie.

I had basically the same question about the District 10 convention at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth. I guess now I don't have to ask. I really wish they would clean up (preferrable clean out) the school part of the CHL laws.
