I'm in Texas and I'm just wondering if it's OK to buy handguns from individuals and if some are there forms sellers and buyers have to fill up ?? Ever since I've applied for my CHL you can't believe how more law abiding I've became.. ;-) ..Thanks for any response!!

Private party sales between 2 citizens of TX are basically unregulated. Don't sell to a known felon or anything like that though...

I have heard this argued two ways:

1. Check their drivers license to make sure they are a Tx resident and make the deal. This is the advice that was given to me by a guy that said he bought and sold literlay hundreds of firearms last year. He said that he was advised by someone from ATF to either keep very detailed records or none at all, so he choose none at all.

2. Each party exchange there personal information including DL number and DOB and issue or receive a receipt with serial number and amount.

I don't trade a lot of guns, but maybe 5-10 a year and I exercise the second option and I keep very detailed records. But I don't give out my DL number of DOB unless pressed and to date I have never been pressed to do so.

Thanks for the quick replies!!! I'm not thinking of selling but maybe buying a used handgun with an almost certain unverifiable source. No biggie but just something I want to tinker with...Thanks again!!

Call me paranoid, but I'd rather buy and sell from a business with a license.

I have had numerous successful encounters with firearms sale/trades even with people on this forum.
