Girlfriend
So I got in a fight with my girlfriend this weekend about carrying. She can't believe that, when I told her I was getting my CHL and told her I'd be carrying a gun, I meant that I'd really be carrying a gun.
She even went so far as to say she'd rather a BG kill her or me than have me kill someone in defense of her or my life. I brought up the shootings at VA Tech and the church in Colorado and mentioned that someone with a CHL at VA Tech (if it were legal to carry on campus) could have stopped the killer and saved many lives, much as the woman in Colorado did. She actually responded with "How do you know it wasn't their time to go and that's what was meant to happen?"
Arguments of mine that "How do you know if we're ever in that situation and I'm armed, it's not HIS time to go and I was meant to stop him?" fell on deaf ears.
Has anyone else ever had this "discussion" with your significant other?

Re: Girlfriend
My ex-fiance hated firearms of any type. We made an agreement that as long as it was out of her sight that it could not bother her, but she never seemed to hold true to that and would always use it to fuel fights that were unrelated.

Re: Girlfriend
Wouldn't want her raising my children. There are enough XY chromosomed humanoids who have lost their man card for women like that in the world. Sounds like a good excuse to move on.

Re: Girlfriend
Tell her that you don't want to be with someone that values their own life and the lives of people around her, less than that of a murderer or rapist.
Move on, don't wait, do it now.

Re: Girlfriend
I second that. Time to dump her and move on. You can find someone who doesn't have such a nihilistic attitude toward the sanctity of human life.aardwolf wrote:She told you what your life is worth to her. Run away while you still can.

Re: Girlfriend
What they said.
Her worldview and yours are so different, it's best to move on now rather than later (unless you honestly believe you can convince her that your viewpoint is more in line with the real world).

Re: Girlfriend
Your probably not getting the answer that you were hoping for.
I agree with what others have said about getting out of the relationship. Her statement is so far away from what you believe, it's problematic for a continuing relationship.
Good luck.

Re: Girlfriend
This statement is oozing with pacifism...and is a gross disregard for the value placed on human life (namely...yours and hers). She even went so far as to say she'd rather a BG kill her or me than have me kill someone in defense of her or my life.
"Meant to happen" suggests pre-destiny and control of our every movement by a higher power. If this "higher power" is the same God I worship... then she needs to spend a little time in her Bible. This flies in the face of Biblical teachings in terms of "self defense".She actually responded with "How do you know it wasn't their time to go and that's what was meant to happen?"
As for "their time to go", this is an equally dangerous position to take. God has provided us with intelligence (albeit varying degrees), common sense (most of us)...and has given us certain other physical, mental and spiritual tools to survive. We are charged with using this things appropriately and with vigor, lest the evil in this world circumvent that which God intends for us.
I don't know if your GF can be reasoned with or not, if so....then you might extend her that courtesy.
Otherwise...I'd leave so fast it would make her head spin.
Sorry!

Re: Girlfriend
I get both hurt and angry when I hear other women making statements like these. I can't help but wonder if they've been living under a rock.
An attacker doesn't simply threaten us with death. Much more is taken from a woman that has experienced rape. We will all die once, but I don't believe for a minute that rape is something that God sanctions.
She needs to read the writings of rape survivors; their experiences were not "meant to be," nor were they "God's will." We live in a cruel world, be we are not to condone evil and cruel acts to be committed against us.

Re: Girlfriend
Update:
Spoke with her again about it tonight. Turns out she wasn't mad about my carrying a gun - well, she's not excited about it, but that wasn't really the reason for the fight. She was mad because I broke a promise I'd made to her and she just focused on the gun angle instead of dealing with the real issue.
I got her to see my point and she's ok with my carrying.
Thanks for the replies. I was really thinking that I'd have to consider calling things off with her. Wow, this is almost like therapy.

If I could write that eloquently, that's what I would have said, too!Venus Pax wrote:I get both hurt and angry when I hear other women making statements like these. I can't help but wonder if they've been living under a rock.
