Although a bit of a drive, what about Winchester in Ft. Worth?

Winchester is fine, and so are Elk Castle and On Target on this side of town. They are great for pistols but to my knowledge neither has a rifle range over 25 yards. I have gotten to know the people at On Target and that' where go. I liked the Quail Creek set-up, just not the folks that much. I suppose I would make an effort to learn the "Quail Creek laws" if it were closer to my house. I use Alpine's rifle range and the range officers there are usually friendly enough (just follow all the rules and don't shoot too fast and no FMJ ammo ).

Okay, I see your point. Touche. If the Freedom plan was a year long, all you can shoot freedom plan, me and my wife would have been signed up the first time I saw the website...

Sorry, such (especially in 3-4 hour sessions on weekends) could make limited space unavailable for primary purposes (like training and testing and other members' practice).

Your points are valid. I understand it's a small range with limited spots.
I'll try to get by there on your next open house. Maybe we can sign up for a course...you can never have enough training, and after all, you are only like 3 miles away from my house.

But for the original topic, I'm still stuck going to Quail Creek for the majority of my shooting.

Cold Range so can't shoot concealed carry unless I unholster and clear weapon prior to getting out of car(which is what I do)
15/25 yard only pistol range
Some people are idiots

Pro's:
Range Nazi's yell at the idiots(admittedly, sometimes they yell at more than just the idiots)
Can pick up brass(another plus is that the idiots that are there don't pick up their own brass, so it makes it easier to put up with them)
Can shoot as many guns for as long as my ammo holds out for a reasonable price.
Use any targets you want, even paper plates(I print targets off the internet)
Rarely have to wait for a 'lane'
Less than 20 minute drive from Highland Village

Ranges are a compromise. There has only been one range I went to that was perfect. It's a private range, and he only opens it to his former students and some fellow CHL's. Plus it was free, so I am biased. But it is also down by Canton.

Until then, I'll take as many training classes as I can, shoot as much as I can, and try to become as proficient as I can.

I also figured out OnTarget was about 10 minutes from my w@#k so I'll try it out today or tomorrow.

The last time I was at Quail Creek (October 2006?), it was to confirm zero on scoped "hand cannon" prior to elk hunt. There was a 50 yard bench that was just about right for my use with .454 7 1/2" Ruger SRH and some hot 45 Colt ammo.

A buddy had gone with me and wanted to try the Ruger on adjacent 100 yard rifle range with some full blown .454 Hornady loads. After buddy finished the first cylinder, an old guy on the bench next to us came over and asked "What is that thing? Every time you lit one of those off, I thought my nose was going to bleed!" He probably went home, got on the internet and called us idiots.

This is funny to me. The last time I shot at Quail Creek I had the opposite problem. No range control. I don't know how many times I jumped on the jerk shooting in the lane beside me. When a cease fire was called...and it sure seemed like forever before they would call one...people would mill around their rifles while others where down range changing targets. The bozo I jumped on would stand there loading his magazines and what not. I don't much like guys messing around with their weapons while I am standing down range from the business end of them. It seemed like total chaos out there. This was at least 20+ years ago. It sounds like they have gone too far in the other direction now. It may make you want to knock what's left of that old mans teeth out, but the alternative is far worse. I still won't go out there. Especially since I moved from the Lake Dallas area 20 years ago and am much closer to Garland Public shooting range(no FMJ rifle ammo allowed) and Bullet trap indoor range for my pistol practice.

I went to Quail Creek once. I think I dealt with the same jerk. I will never go back. I have been shooting for over 40 years, 24 of those in the military. I will not stand for some geezer treating me like I have no idea what I'm doing.

Shot there today since it was so nice outside. No issues with the rangemaster working there today. Polite, talked to the young kids shooting with their dads, small talk, etc. I used to shoot there quite often, but had not been back since running across this thread. Maybe they've been reading this thread...

When I shot there I had a bad time with the Range Nazi's at the range. Treated me like an ignorant pig rather than a paying customer - wont put up with that. Plus I need a place to shoot all this surplus military FMJ ammunition...

I've shoot at Qual Creek a few times, and although I was never confronted by the RO for any infraction, I did witness others getting reamed out. They may or may not have deserved it... but it surley could have been handled in a more professional way.

Some other options for ranges in Fort Worth area. I sometimes shoot at "the Shooting Galary" It's an older place, kinda in "The Hood" but the owner is a Tarrant county officer (fire arms and defense trainer) and the people there are all pretty nice. Older place but not too bad.

Another option is BassPro in Grapevine. Very nice indoor range out to 25 yards, and they even have an indoor rifle tube. Only problem is getting in. You have to have you guns checked at the door, where they put a trigger lock on them, then once at the range, they take the lock off. Same thing going back out. PIA, but they only charge $9 for what is supoposed to be an hour, but unless there are people waiting to shoot, they don't time you. I' was there one time for about 3 hours.
