Winchester Gallery-Ft Worth.

Post by milkcartonkid »

I have been shooting there recently and often (as I can afford) and i find it to be a very nice place to shoot (climate controlled-fairly close to my home). The folks that work there seem to be polite, maybe slightly condescending. They have a pretty nice collection of rent guns (arm and leg required though) i guess my only hang up is, the fact that they have 2 ranges and it seems that no matter what time of the day i head there either alone or with my woman i am generally situated right next to the most uninformed unsafe moron that the world has ever known. i guess not having a member of the staff or a range officer makes me kind of nervous.
EX. a few weeks ago me and my better half headed up there on a "hooky" day from work and in walks this dude and his gf and they are going to shoot some pearl handled chrome plated .25cal auto pimpstick that was probably purchased at the corner of Hell and Gone near Arc Park on the East side...anyway, i digress. our meeting went like this:

i am busy watching my wife load and set up with my Glock 30 and so i am standing behind her giving pointers..
old dude whips out his piece (he is to my right pistol pointed my direction :eek6 ) says something to his lady and proceeds to slap the mag in/jack a round and sweep me and my girl. all the while talking to his chick about something.
I looked at him and asked him if he wouldnt mind pointing that thing down range instead of me. he says sorry but gives me the "mean" face. I went back to my business at hand but kept my eye on him. EVERY shot is followed by and excuse why he is so off center (his target was at about 8 ft) and the next 2 reloads include a glance at me and a "sweep" by him. as if to dare me to speak to him again. I would have had to walk across a parking lot to get help at this point and since my father didnt raise no punk i called him on it and told him he needed to be safer with his gun and would he mind moving down the range away from us. I was told that "No I wont, i do what i want" and he went back to shooting. We left. after reporting this skill level and demeanor to the powers that be. Hopefully it was fixed. and hopefully they can place a range official in both buildings for supervision.

Sorry its long. just wanted to report on what i saw.
Be safe out there.

If you are concerned about that type of thing then ask if you can be in the range in front of the counter. That way the guys working are looking at you most of the time.

I shoot IDPA there and do some of my range sessions there. The staff has always been very nice. They also have cameras on all of the firing lines. All you have to do is tell the staff what is going on and I am willing to bet it WILL be delt with. If you dont want to seem obvious, just walk outside and call the front desk from your cell.

IMPO if someone swept me I would say something the first time. If it happened again I would tell the staff.

I've been a member at the Winchester Gallery for 3 years. I have seen some pretty dangerous gun handling. I have also yelled at other customers for blatant safety infractions. :bigmouth If I get swept with your muzzle, you will hear about it and if you cop an attitude, I will make sure your range session ends for the day. There is NO EXCUSE for sweeping another human being with the muzzle of your firearm. :mad5

Winchester is THE place to shoot indoors in Fort Worth. I have been going there for about 12 years. The range officers don't breath down your neck, but if you report a problem with another customer, they WILL take care of it.

There are stupid people everywhere you go. It's just part of shooting at a public range. How the staff deals with it, is what matters. And I have found the staff there to be top-notch.

Are you stationed at Dyess AFB? I spent my last year of active duty there. Gotta love those B-1Bs!

You might try Elk Castle on the west side of Fort Worth, right on I-30. They only have 7 lanes but almost never full. The range officer constantly watches over the shooters via camera and the large window. They run a pretty tight ship out there and they never hesitate to correct things. They also have a great deal on rentals. You pay one rental fee and you can shoot as many of their guns as you want. Most rental places charge you one fee per gun you touch.

indeed sir! a proud member of the SFS there. and yeah, the b1's are great, especially when they decide to break down right about the time that i am about to get off of work and instead of leaving, i have to run crazy all the way to the ramp to assist in an IFE. Nice. LOL

All, thanks for the info and I do like Winchester i wasnt trying to hate or anything...just some opinions/observations of mine.

I was a Dyess back in the mid 70s when there were B-52s on the flight line.

I took my CHL quals there and while I rented a very nice colt commander at a fair price, the ammo is extremely high and the range fees are a little on the steep side. I would rather shoot at Bass pro for $4/hr than pay $25 for a decent range

Go on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. It then it is only $9.50. NEVER BUY AMMO AT THE RANGE. It is like buying a Coke at 6 flags.

I went there back in August last summer to learn how to shoot. They offered lessons on their site for $30 per hour but when i got there they said nope, it was $100 for three hours. I found them to be condescending but I took it in stride. When I told them I was thinking of buying a Beretta they tried dearly to talk me out of it. I never went back. I shoot at The Shooter's Club on N.E. 28th St. now. They're not only cheaper but the people are nicer and it's closer to where I live. I just took the CHL course there a few weeks ago and they charged me $100, $25 off. By the way, I've never seen a person shooting unsafely at The Shooter's Club but I know if anyone did, they'd be dealt with as soon as management hears about it.
