State papers before or during class?
I was wondering which method of applying for your CHL you guys prefer... getting the state paperwork done ahead of time at the DPS website or doing it all when you take the course?
I'm a fan of the ease of doing such things online, but on the other hand it would be nice to have someone who can help me fill it out if it gets tricky.

Re: State papers before or during class?
You don't actually "fill it out online".
You answer a few questions and then they send you the paperwork that is partially filled in based on your answers (personal questions that you answer to determine eligibility or not).
Then when you take your course, you will actually fill out the remaining blanks (under instructor direction).
The advantage of doing it online means that you have your forms when you arrive at your class. By not doing it, you can get the forms from the instructor, but then you would have to fill out the Name/address/other stuff that would have already been filled out by the State if you had done it online. It's your choice.

the wife and i both got the packet ahead of time so we had it to fill out in the class. just seems much easier to do it that way. Some of the stuff does come pre-filled in for you too.
Doing it that way let us fill the sheets out during class with the instructor helping us so when we walked out our packet was completely ready to mail.

My son and I received the packet in class and didi all the supporting items there, then completed and submitted the apps. Work OK for us.

I did it online ahead of time, although it really wasn't much more than a few questions. I would personally do that just to help ensure that there are no data entry errors. When you fill it out online, they send you a paper version of the information you filled out. You can review it and make any changes when you send in the final application packet. Just my $.02.

Another small advantage to applying on-line is that you get your PIN with your paperwork. If you don't use the on-line method, you have to wait for the PIN to arrive in the mail.

I think the waiting is easier if you don't have a PIN but it's a personal choice.bpet wrote:Another small advantage to applying on-line is that you get your PIN with your paperwork. If you don't use the on-line method, you have to wait for the PIN to arrive in the mail.

That's odd. I filled out my entire application online and it was printed / ready to sign. My handwriting is terrible so I liked the fact that I was able to typed it all in advance.

The place I took my course, provided all the paperwork needed, took our photos for us, got us fingerprinted, etc. so I filled it out afterwards. That's also the same place my wife took her course as well.sceneshopninja wrote:I was wondering which method of applying for your CHL you guys prefer... getting the state paperwork done ahead of time at the DPS website or doing it all when you take the course?
