Been carrying about a month now. The other day I racked the slide and was about to holster my Glock 19 when I remembered to check the chambered round indicator. It was not sticking out! How could this be? I pulled the slide back a little to look, and the magazine just fell out. I had not slapped it in hard enough, so it was not locked. Had I needed to draw I would have had an empty chamber and the magazine would have fallen out. So, before holstering always make sure you're locked and loaded.

I HAVE had magazines fall out. Especially happened to me when I took an IPSC safety course last April. It happened twice. In a row.

I now down-load my Glock magazines and have a much stronger spank on the butt... of the gun.

Not sure about the G19, but my Taurus PT 111 has one.

It's not the gun, but the gun handling.

I lacked a lot of practice "running the gun" due to the majority of my time being spent shooting off a table on a formal range.

I'd not loaded my magazines to the maximum capacity, normally. I had not been engaged in tactical reloads.

While I don't have any great depth of experience at IDPA I have been much better at my gun handling skills since the IPSC safety course. Not cramming my magazines totally full helps.

That's one reason I wish my work schedule were different. IDPA shooting gives me confidence in running the gun, not just static range target shooting.

Yes the extractor on the newer generation Glocks have a bump that sticks out a little when a round is chambered :)

My H&K USP Compact has a loaded chamber indicator. The top of the extractor is painted red and protrudes a little bit when a round is chambered. It can also be felt by hand in the dark, although it doesn't stick out much. My Sig 1911 doesn't have that, although it does have the external type extractor, like the H&K's.

However, my policy for both pistols when reloading following a cleaning, or in preparation for carrying, is to insert the magazine, chamber a round, safe the gun for carry - either cocked and locked in the case of the 1911, or decocked in the case of the H&K*, eject the magazine and replace the chambered round, and then reinsert the magazine.

* For now, when I carry the H&K, it is decocked with safety off. The double action pull is long and deliberate, I'm guessing about 9-10 lbs, and my holster encloses the trigger, so there's no way that I can discern to discharge the gun without deliberately drawing the gun, putting finger on trigger, and pulling it. I am left handed and the pistol came with right handed controls. An ambidextrous saftey/decocker switch is available from the factory, but they are currently on backorder. As soon as I can get one installed, I might consider carrying this pistol cocked and locked.

There is nothing wrong with a full magazine. Both XDs and Glocks do just fine.

That's how I carry my HK. I'm more worried about forgetting the safety than the long trigger pull. I just don't train enough with disabling the safety on draw.

I've been carrying a 1911 cocked and locked, so it's not that big of an issue for me, but I confess that the H&K does make that a simple choice to carry decocked. OTH, I'll probably always reflexively swipe at the safety anyway, regardless of which I'm carrying. I'd rather keep the habit, as it won't really affect deploying the H&K, but I'd hate to forget to unsafe a 1911 as I was drawing.
