Application Completed!
Sent my packet for first time CHL, and it arrived at Texas DPS on 2/8/2008. Now the waiting game begins, but I've decided not to check for status updates at all until May. Maybe that would be the best decision for my stress and blood pressure.
Cheers

Re: Packet sent in, now I wait for my first permit
May is a long time, but I encourage you to not check your status until you file your income taxes. If you overpaid, see if you get your CHL or your IRS refund first.
We're here. With gear. Get used to it.

Welcome to TexasCHLforum! I hope your wait isn't too long, but recent reports are not very good.

Thanks for the heads up - I have learned in my experiences that being pleasantly surprised after setting a lower expectation is more preferred over being negatively surprised after setting a higher expectations, even if the final result is the sameCharles L. Re: Packet sent in, now I wait for my first permit
Class taken 1/5/08
Packet mailed certified 1/25/08
TXDPS signed for it on 1/28/08.
Taxes filed electronically with refund scheduled to be in my account on 2/26/08. They can tell me with certainty based on past years when my refund will be processed, but the State of Texas can not tell me about an application. I'm willing to chalk that up to background checks, etc. No problem with that personally.
I'm with the earlier poster regarding setting lower expectations for something like this. I've read too many postings on this forum to expect a quick turnaround. I'm waiting until 2/28/08 for PIN to arrive in the mail; if not received by that date, I'll shoot them an e-mail.

Welcome aboard both of you new guys. If you use the time in the WR to get your gear together, practice carrying at home, going to the range, then you will not have time to get boared patting your foot waiting.
We are glad to have you.

Welcome. I have found that when you are dealing with any government entity that if you always expect the worst, you will never be disappointed. Seems to work in alot of other areas as well.
I check mine every day just for grins. its been about three weeks, and it still hasnt changed from 'packet mailed to applicant'. Good thing is, you can still carry in your vehicle, and practice getting used to a holster at home. Like I have said before, just thank the Lord above you dont live in a state like Illinois, or D.C. Imagine the wait those folks face!

Mine was 52 days at "Packet Mailed to Applicant" from the time they received my paperwork.

surprising update:
Packet arrived at DPS 2/8
Pin number received 2/28
Setting low expectations for bureaucracy does lead to nice surprises!

dukesean,
You lucky dog! I mailed my packet near the same time as you and have not received my pin number. However your post gives me hope.
Packet signed for by DPS on 2/5.

Re: Packet sent in, now I wait for my first permit
Interestingly, the letter they mailed me was dated 2/22. So, from receipt of packet to composition of letter took 10 business days. I suppose that's not all that crazy.
Now let's hope they don't find out about my felony. JUST KIDDING.
