What is your opinion on RBCD ammo???

I got hooked on the performance of this ammo a couple of years ago...

And understanding ammo discussions is like opening that can of worms you sometimes try to avoid...

Well, I just couldn't stand it anymore...

I figure this forum was the best to float the inevitable out there and get a decent up or down concensus from those here I trust with their thoughts...

Steve- no offense...but I wouldn't use it on a bet.

Although I wouldn't exactly get in line to be shot with it...it can't be verified that any major LE agency issues it, so I wouldn't even consider it.

Magic bullets...aren't.

Of course, I am not one to base my useage of equipment or ammo on what the armed forces or PD's around the country use, or are allowed to use...

As for the guys on "tacticalforum", sure, looks like a credible debate on the merits of the ammo in question...I sure don't have access to a spectral analysis machine just to verify the claims of a "blended" metal tip to this bullet...

But as far as the few (they are a little expensive to plink with ) rounds I have shot...I have shot them into a t-shirted, denim jacketed block of duct-seal...Needless to say the wounding characteristics are on par with the claims from the manufacturer...

You're absolutely right, you don't want to catch one of these...

I'm with you as well, I'm not a believer (or seeker) of magic bullets either...But this product seems to hold its own...

I'm actually thinking that this may not be a very good idea to carry (for self-defense purposes) this type of ammo...

It could, and very well may be used against you in court if it determined that you are using a high-performance "designed to kill" (lawyer-speak) ammunition...

Thats why, much to a lot of egg on my face, I have chosen to go back to my second choice of defensive ammo Speer - Gold Dots...

Thought it may still be interesting to see if anyone else cares to wiegh in on this topic...

I'm just thinking what I'm going to do with 60 or so rounds I have left...I sure don't want to waste them on paper...

Stevie, we should do a human temperature pot-roast test on these RBCD ammo. lol.

I have a box of .45s at 80gr. and I have yet to used them to plink with yet because of the exact reasons you've stated.
Expensive
and may/can be used against you in court if used as self defense ammo.

Another plinking ammo you may want to look into is Aguila IQ ammo. They are similar in lethality (as they claimed) as the RBCD ammo (.45 at 117gr.), but it is much cheaper ($5.99 a box of 20 at Natchez)

If I had the slightest reservations about carrying it, I wouldn't. I would hate to have it loaded up and need it, then not use it because of being worried about what would happen later. In the time to second guess you may be in a world of trouble.

If I had it and didn't want to carry it I would use it to function test your carry firearms, or sell it.

What amazed me the most about this stuff was the bullet weight...

.40 are at 77 gr's.

and your .45's at 80 gr's.

With the velocities they tout with nothing extra added to the powder used to propel them downrange...No +P loads...

And the energy into the target...Well... Getting hit/punched with a full swung 10# sledgehammer would seem like a preferable choice...

I brought up PD's since nearly all of them spec/use ammo that has been developed to pass the FBI standard protocols, i.e. minimum 12" penetration in calibrated gel as well as barrier protocols, plus the fact that the ammo's performance is documentable in officer-involved shootings.

Until then I see RBCD ammo's advantage being at best, theoretical. If I unfortunately ever need to "clear leather"- I'm not too comfortable with theory.

Very true...Thats why I'm kinda on the fence with this stuff...

I like it because of its performance, and on my little test with it, I was impressed...

But the legal side of it causes me pause...

An over-zealous prosecution of a defensive shooting incident may hinge upon the determination that the ammunition used was "high-performance", thus premeditated that you had intent to "kill", even though you may state your intent was to "stop" the threat...Even if all the conditions of the use of deadly force were met...

See what I'm getting at???

Kinda funny how the "equipment" used could determine whether you are prosecuted or not...

I guess I just really wanted to see if anyone else loads up with this stuff...Its a local Texas company, and I really like doing business with companies like that, especially if the product they produce works like they say it works...

I shot a pig that was about 150 lbs w/ 10mm Gold Dots and it was perfect. It was recovered under the skin of the off-shoulder. I will post a pic of the recovered bullet when my wife gets back into town. (she's the computer nerd of the family)

I also shot a 200+ lbs pig with 62 gr Bonded Fed TRU and it was recovered on the off side shoulder, and I shot a 35-50 lbs pig with my Walther PPK with .380 Silvertips and I recovered that on as well.

I was happy with the bullets, but none of them killed the pigs stone dead. They were all hurting, but I don't think they would have been immediately our of the fight.

my buddy on the other hand shot one and killed it (300 lbs easy) dead with a .22 WMR, so go figure.

Sounds like ya being sorta rough on the pig population. Ya got anything that you DON'T shoot 'em with?

That's a major problem I have with the hyped-up ammo. When it blows up on impact, it just ain't got any horsepower left to reliably get to "the electrical". And on a critter as tough as pigs, may not even get to the "plumbing".

Amazing how important shot placement is. A buddy of mine shot a pig when I was with him w. a .25 WSM right in the chest and I still had to put him down w/ a brain shot from my AR.

Hogs have a well deserved reputation for being tough.

For those who don't already know: Always... shoot hogs in the neck. Anywhere from behind the jaw... to just forward of the shoulder and they will drop in their tracks. A well placed shot in the heart/lung area will certainly dispatch a hog, but all too often...you don't get an "exit" hole, and this can lead to a difficult time blood trailing.

Interestingly, the internal organs of a hog, their size, and placement...are so similar to that of humans...that they have the have the nickname (in the scientific world) of "horizontal man".

We need to remember that typical handgun ammo just doesn't churn up very much energy. Shot placement is critical, and more than one shot (to stop a threat) should be expected.

I pray God I never have to find out.

Those hogs up in N.E. Texas are really starting to be a problem to us on our digz up there...

They keep rooting up my Dad's private driving range when they roam through it from time to time...

It appears the only reliable hardware I have to effectively drop one, regardless of weight is the BAR 30.06 I got from my grandfather...

And seeings how they only get out active is at night up there, it makes it difficult to come into contact with one...

We've been trying to live trap them in big cages with corn for bait, and have trapped a few over a long period of time...

But I'd still like to drop one like a bad habit just to make me feel better...

One thing I'd like to do is rig up one of my Dad's TC Contender combo's with a NV scope and keep that handy for the occasional night recon run...

He's probably got every barrel they have ever made up there, so my only "funny" quirk I have is how do you "really" sight in a NV scope???

Oh well, we'll figure something out somehow...
