Talked with the guys at Advanced Gunworks in Roanoke. They are taking over the range that the other guys failed at. They are looking for feedback from people to build that range people want. Might be worth contacting them if interested....website is pretty cool.

Quail Creek is a range only in the loosest defintion of the word "range." The guys who work there are "interesting".... and the place is a pretty much a dump....

Can you give us the range location? I'm in Grapevine, and Quail Creek is beginning to lose its flavor due to rudeness on the part of the range officers. The range on Luna Road is still under construction, TacPro is too far. Alpine is too far. The Bass Pro rifle tube has only one station. I'm not aware of any other ranges within a reasonable distance of Grapevine.

It's ironic as heck. When I lived in the People's Republic of California, I had a public 750 yard range located 20 minutes from my house. It was at the edge of a suburban area of Los Angeles, not 30 minutes from downtown L.A. Here in Texas, where people understand their 2nd Amendment rights and choose to exercise them, it is darn hard to find a place to shoot a rifle - particularly past 100 yards - without having to spend a ton of money and get on a waiting list so you can join some private club.

I've never been able to understand why that is.

I like to keep my rifles zeroed for 200 yards. In fact, for the bullet drop calculations to work on my scopes, the rifle has to be zeroed at 200 yards. At a 100 yard range, all I can do is aim at the bullseye, and try to zero my scopes so that the bullet impacts at the right height above the point of aim. That might be fine for hunting use where that difference is still well within minute of white tail, but for bench resting, it's pretty much useless.

Perhaps he is doing his own thing.

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah, I realize by now that I'm preaching to the choir, but I still don't get how a gun grabbing state like California can have long distance target ranges within 30 minutes of downtown LA, and in a state like Texas, there are so few anywhere near a major metropolis. Heck, about an hour out of downtown LA, there's a shooting club (Desert Marksmen) with a 1,000 yard range. The 750 yard range I mentioned is the Angeles Shooting Range in Little Tujunga Canyon. And yet, land in SoCal is hard to find and very expensive, while land here - even in the DFW area, isn't that hard to find, and sells for much less per acre.

I've lived here for a little over a year and a half now, and it's a mystery to me, that's all.

The other thing that I don't understand about it all is that, given all the questions and complaints I've seen on other gun boards about range availability, particularly around the DFW area, it would seem like a no-brainer for someone with enough investment capital to put together an investment group and build a large, first class range. People would flock to it all the time if it was run properly. You would think that it would be fairly profitable. It would also have the added benefit of forcing the other already existing ranges to up their game if they want to stay in business. Go old capitalism at work. I think the main reason that some of the ranges around here are so crummy is that they know they don't have to excel because their customers don't have any choice.

I phoned them, and the guy called me back today. He said that they had broken ground on the range, but it wasn't finished yet, and he didn't know when that would be. But I guess they're working on it as they can.

The range officers at Quail Creek behave as if they are guards at a prison camp - try having a conversation with one of them, unless your one of their "pals" all you will get is an annoyed look and a dismissive response.

It is a huge dissapointment for me that Tactical Edge Shooting Center didn't come to fruition, I dislike most of the ranges in the D/FW area as they are all run down, poorly maintained, in bad neighborhoods, etc.

Has anyone found any updated information on this? I googled it, and came across this site: http://www.advancedgunworks.com/index.php but it doesn't appear that there's an actual range there. The address and phone number is all for Cabela's, and I've never seen/been told about a range there.

The address is there's and is about 4 miles from Cabela's. It also have there numbers, email, etc. Not sure what you were looking for. I also know they bought the land and should be moving dirt shirtly. I know many think they have heard it for a long time, however you have not heard it from these guys as they are for real. I suggest you call them if in disbelief...817-742-0330

Ok, I got all excited about Tactical Edge when it was "about to break ground" for over 6 months, then one of the guys murdered his brother and that was the end of that (besides being a couple hundred grand short on capital investment). That being said, Ill believe someone is building a range in Roanoke about as much as Ill believe that Exxon/Mobil is going to begin giving away gasoline tomorrow.

Where exactly is this supposed range to be constructed? Certainly not at 377 north of 170 where the other range was going to be, its an empty field that hasn't been touched in nearly a year. (I go by there daily during my commute) I would indeed be nice if this happens, as others have said Quail Creek is no longer an option and everything else is too far or too run down.

Yes, actually, it is North of 170 off 377. We will sit on corner of Henrietta Creek and 377 (West side). We will house 30 25 yard pistol lanes and 6 100 yard rifle lanes, video sim, and 400 sqft of classroom adjacent to the range. We also will manufacture a custom 1911 and M4. Again, if you don't wish to believe it ,stop in and see us. We have the drawings and elevations in the gunsmithing and manufacturing shop at the same location. You can ask for Dave or Jerry if you have questions.
