Ruger 10/22 magazines not feeding

#1

Post by LarryH »

OK, so I've had this 10/22 since about 1970. Until just a few months ago, it had not been fired for over thirty years. Back when I was firing it occasionally, I purchased two additional stock magazines and a 50-round extended magazine.

Now only one of the stock magazines feeds consistently. We just bought two more stock magazines last week, and only one of them feeds consistently. The rest jam at least one round out of ten, jamming the lead into the edge of the chamber.

Is this common behavior for 10/22's or am I just unlucky?

It's certainly been common for me.

I found the procedure a few years ago on http://www.rimfirecentral.com for cleaning and re-tensioning stock 10-22 mags.

I'll see if I can come up with it again.

Here's one:

http://www.heypete.com/pete/shooting/rugermag.html

The following comment was appended to the above link:

Chief Says : Very good lesson , But lastly one needs to relieve the shaft spring tension. After the shaft is tightened , one needs to back off the tension by turning the shaft 1/8 to 1/2 turn counterclockwise.

I have noticed " especially on my max tensioned " magazines , ones where the hexed head nut is turned as tight as it will go. If you dont relieve the shaft tension a bit ( 1/8 to 1/2) turn, sometimes the rotor/spring/ammo will jam just like a weak "poor adjusted" magazine.

A good test = If your favorite magazine gives you trouble after you have
done the prescribed adjustments and cleaning , grab your allen wrench next time you go shooting or to the range. When your magazine jamms - turn the shaft with the allen wrench 1/8 turn counterclockwise. WOOH ! WALLA ammo now feeds fine again.

RELIEVING SPRING TENSION = IS A MUST DO WITH THE 10-22 MAGAZINE.

Those 50 rounders are absolutely HORRIBLE

The "hotlips" work ok...but to get 100% reliable you have to use metal feed magazines

there is a company that makes all metal 25 rounders..but they are like $70 bucks a pop!

I converted my 10/22 into a Krinker Plinker

Thanks for the responses. Whodathunk that brand new magazines would be maladjusted?

I did toss the 50-rounder in the trash barrel at the range, but kept the stock magazines, so will take a look at your references and see if a little judicious adjusting this weekend has any effect.

Thanks again.

Fake can

Just to look purdy
The Krinker-Plinker is a complete conversion kit for your Ruger® 10/22® to turn it into a miniature AKS-74U Krinkov. This is not just a cheap drop-in plastic stock, but a true transformation using original military AK-74 parts and our stamped, molded, cast and CNC-machined pieces. Installation is simple, just remove the stock and barrel from your 10/22® and install the kit in about 20 minutes.
Go to the site...the short barrel requres a FFL, the false can one doesn't

You mean a tax stamp not FFL. I have a TAC 65 that will work on this, maybe we can hook-up some time to try it out.
