Truck Guns!
Truck Guns!
Here we go again! Truck Guns! Discuss.
With the recent terror attacks in New Orleans-Bourbon Street and Las Vegas-Trump Tower and the predicted dumpster fire that 2025 is going be, potential Trump related activities and other terrorism and "activism", the topic of truck guns has come up again in my inner shooting circles.
For me any long gun would be to compliment my on body EDC and provide me with additional range and firepower for defensive use in suburban, city, and rural areas as "get home" gun, if I am going to carry a long gun I will try balance its potential capability while maintaining a reasonable cost and mitigate potential maintenance issues.
Pistoleer:
My EDC is a sub compact 9mm Pistol with 1-10 rd magazine and 2 spare 15 round magazines. 40 round of ammo on my person.
I also keep 6-15 round magazines in my vehicle just in case, an additional 90 rounds of 9mm for a total of 130 rounds.
I also have 100 rounds of ammo just incase I make an unplanned trip to the range. So that is 230 rounds of 9mm.
So at the moment my truck gun is really just extra ammo for my always on body EDC 9mm pistol. No big financial loss if stolen and not a problem to carry in case I have to abandon my vehicle. I can maintain grayman status. But range is limited.
Rifleman:
However, if I were to start carrying a long gun in my vehicle on a regular basis it would be a basic 16" 5.56 PSA AR-15 with FSP/Carry Handle Sights (50/200 zero) and a sling and 7-30 rd magazines w M193, I have and Ace Case 6-pack magazine carrier. No expensive optics to worry about for theft and more importantly no batteries to fail or worry about maintaining.
Not a terrible loss if stolen but I'd prefer not to lose it. It is something that I would have to carry in case I abandon my vehicle and would significantly reduce my ability to maintain grayman status. But the upside is the additional firepower and capability it would provide, ability to engage threat from a greater distance. Better for activism and traffic blocking protest type events. I have this setup already, it's just a matter of starting to carry it.
However, from previous experience, theft is a real possibility.
I usually carry this rifle setup when making long trips but not as my daily truck gun.
What say you?

Re: Truck Guns!
During the "peaceful protests" of 2020 I was carrying at least 1 pistol and 1 AR in the vehicle.
Clint Smith has that classic saying: ""The handgun would not be my choice of weapon if I knew I was going to a fight. I’d choose a rifle, a shotgun, an RPG or an atomic bomb instead."
Kyle Morgan recommends the Fold AR: https://foldar.com/
AR pistols are also a nice option. 11.5 is a nice all around barrel length.
You can disguise that stuff in a non-gun case to look like something else. Vehicle safes are probably the best option though.

Re: Truck Guns!
Never feel a need to carry an AR during the turbulent year of 2020. But then again, I didn't got a whole lot of places that had me worried and stayed close to the house at night. Even now, I do not feel a need to carry an AR. I normally carry a full size Glock 17 with an extra magazine. MAYBE I carry a third if I'm worried about being in a bad area during a bad time? I'd rather having something on me. If I'm needing to get to my vehicle for a bigger firearm, I'm getting out of the situation. If I'm driving, IMO, a pistol is going to be more handy than an AR.
I do have a Sig MPX pistol. THAT... I would more than likely keep in a vehicle if a problem arises in a riot situation or something similar. Easier to conceal and maneuver inside and around a vehicle. Not as powerful as an AR though. Now I will say that when I go camping out in the boonies of New Mexico or Colorado, I'll keep my AR and shotgun in my truck safe. I'm a lot more paranoid in the woods being miles away from any help.

Re: Truck Guns!
I carry a pistol and spare ammo on me almost everywhere I go. I have considered buying a long gun for my truck, but I am not yet convinced it is a good idea. I don't usually carry a long gun in my patrol car, though there I can see a reason for it.
You have to do a threat analysis of your own, with what you see as threats and how likely each threat is to occur. Then you can begin your defensive planning, balancing the threats with the costs of the counter threat. The fact that I feel comfortable with just a pistol does not mean you should only carry that. It is also not a recommendation that you do carry a long gun. It is just the results of what I see as a realistic threat that might happen to me.

Re: Truck Guns!
Short of the TEOTWAWKI, carrying an full-size AR while wearing a half dozen magazines during any event is likely to draw unwanted attention to you, either from law enforcement or ne'er-do-wells.
I work 30 miles from my house on the opposite side of town. My wife works about 12 miles on the opposite side of town from me. A long gun seems to make a lot of sense in the event I either have to try to make it to my wife, or my adult kids, grandkids, or to the house. If I roll up on some disturbance, my first inclination is to simply turn around and drive away. If it develops around me or I have to make my way through it, or near it, I'd rather have a discrete long gun available. When I travel it always goes with me.
My "GAB*", a 5.11 LV10 sling bag, carries a 300BO folding AR (Pantheon Dolos and Law Tactical Adapter) with a 2 point sling so it is, by default, my truck gun. 3-20 round magazines. It can be deployed, from the bag, and rounds on target in 30 seconds or less. My pistol is still my primary weapon.
I can keep the gun in the bag and go minimalist (and gray), i.e. getting out of the area of a situation fast and not needing any additional provisions. If I have to start hiking, I can pull out the gun and restock the bag with supplies from the truck in a matter of a couple of minutes or grab another, more complete (and more fluff) truck bag. Carrying the gun with the stock collapsed is very low profile and can easily fit under a jacket or a button down shirt as a cover garment. I wouldn't say it is concealed, just not very obvious. Preferably, I'd drive and use the truck as transportation, safety, and resupply.
Carrying a lot of ammo, physically, is not a priority for me. One is simply weight and space and concealment. Second, I plan on avoiding a prolonged firefight. If, IF, I have to engage it will only be to resolve an immediate situation and then disengage as quickly as possible. Exchanging bullets with someone else is a good way to develop a new, unwanted, hole in the body.
Thief is a concern but I park behind a gate at work and I don't worry about my truck getting broken into when it's sitting behind my shop. When I'm out and about I am not usually very far away or for long. It's a risk but the black bag sitting in the backseat floorboard is hard to see and I don't keep anything else in the truck that is enticing nor do I have any decals that might identify anything.
*GAB - Get Away Bag. It's not really a Get Home Bag but has enough in it to get me out of a situation and get someplace safe. It is mainly the AR, mags, and IFAK with a few other tidbits like a Leatherman, some cash, light stick, short hank of paracord, and lighter wrapped in duct tape. I carry more GHB supplies in my truck. My EDC is my pistol and at least one reload, two knives, a flashlight, and IFAK so the GAB simply augments that.
All of this said, and carried daily, I hope I never have to worry about it.

Re: Truck Guns!
Not sure if it's allowed or not but I'd like to share something that Gabe Suarez just posted directly related to this. Basically carrying a truck gun won't work/happen for the majority of people. 1) Most won't bother to consistently keep the truck gun available. 2) The pistol is what most people are going to carry more often and what you need to be good at. 3) My add to this. Theft. Chances are, unless you have a gun safe in your truck (I do but I'm not always driving my truck), it's more likely to be stolen than used.
Someone please let me know if it's ok to share.

OK ready for the bashing. My travel "rifle" in my Kel Tec Sub 2000 in 9mm, Glock Magazines. I carry it in a lap top computer case with 3 30 round magazines and 1 16 round in the gun. These magazines fit my Glock 19. I can carry this in a restaurant, mall, anywhere I want to go and no one even looks at it. It is much more accurate than a handgun and very easy to carry.with the attached sling. People just believe I don't want to leave my computer in the car.

Having such a rifle that uses the same ammo/mags as your carry pistol is I think a good option.howdy wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2025 10:46 pm OK ready for the bashing. Re: Truck Guns!
I don't have a truck gun per se yet. I keep my Glock 19X close by though. However, I find myself kinda wanting one. I am looking at the Ruger PCC in 9mm. It comes apart and goes back together quickly. It uses my Glock mags. It also carries in a backpack. I can load it when I head out in the car or truck, and it stands ready.

My SUV doesnt really have a good hiding place, theres hardly anywhere you cant see from any of the windows.
Thinking about grabbing a SecureIt fast box 20 and mounting it on the lift gate, my stribog with a suppressor mounted or my 8.2 300 blk folded is right at 19 inches and should fit in it.

Re: Truck Guns!
No truck gun for me. The firearm I carry into the car leaves the car with me. If I were to have to return to my car for more firepower, I would simply leave. If I am in my car and need more firepower, I will simply leave.
My EDC is an S&W M&P9 M2.0 Compact 4.6" Spec Series 15+1 with two spare magazines holding 22 each. My preferred long gun to carry is my Kel-Tec Sub2000 Gen 2 with dot sight, which uses my pistols M&P magazines in addition to its 40 round magazine. The Kel-Tec folds and fits my computer bag. I only put my M&P15 in the car when going to training or shooting.

I have had a shotgun stolen out of the back of my truck while returning home from a hunting trip. I was in the store for 11 minutes and security cameras showed the thief in and out in 4 minutes. Hence my hesitation to repeat the same mistake.Jose_in_Dallas wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2025 5:23 pm 3) My add to this. Theft. I also once drove past a small group protesters on I-59 while driving through Houston. As traffic slowed to a crawl and then a stop I was expecting the worst. Fortunately they were not blocking the road and it turned out to be a non-threatening roadside oddity. However, although armed with my EDC and extra mags, I couldn't help but seriously think "damn, I wish I had an AR-15." Hence my hesitation to repeat the same mistake.

Re: Truck Guns!
There are some important thoughts in the thread.
#1 If you are in a vehicle the general rule is you use the vehicle to avoid or escape if you can. The vehicle fight is when you can't get away in your vehicle (examples being a carjacking or riot where your escape path is blocked)
#2 Theft is a major issue. True concealment is vital. Gun safes are the best practice
#3 Using a long gun in an active shooter incident has certain risks and benefits. The long gun may be the better weapon for winning a fight, but creates risks during the linkup afterwards with law enforcement.
