I haven't thought about that place in years! I first shot there taking a commission class taught by Weldon Alexander in 1984. Long time ago. I went a few times after that and always had fun. Haven't been in a very long time. Sorry to hear that Charles past away. He was a good guy.

Weldon worked with my father at the DSO academy, and taught many of those very classes.

I was out at Elm Fork this afternoon with my son to shoot our 22 rifle. Boy what a difference. They actually have very nice pistol bays with 3, 7, 15 25 and 30 yard stations. They are putting in 3 pop up target bays, one cowboy and two terrorist. Since neither their centerfire or .22 ranges are open yet, they were allowing rifles on some 25 yard lanes. And they are black rifle friendly. When I got there, one guy was shooting a fully automatic M16 of some kind. It was pretty awesome!! My son really thought that was cool.

They also have taken out the tubes on the center fire range. I always hated those tubes.

The two rifle ranges are going to be open in January some time and for the time being the pistol range is only going to be open on weekends.

Most of the range guys are new, which is for the most part good although there were a couple of the old guys that I really liked particularly on the pistol range.

I asked about a shoot house but the people I talked to didn't know if that was coming or not

I got the strong impression that they want to appeal to more tactical shooters as well as target shooters and hunters. When they get it done, this is going to be an awesome range.

Elm Fork, eh? I've shot skeet and sporting clays there, but I've never had a look at the handgun/rifle section. Always good to hear of a place I can bring my FAL to shoot - would anyone know if they allow FMJ?
According to a guy involved;
I know the issue of FMJ has come up and I discussed the subject with the owner. When the rifle range opens it will be FMJ FRIENDLY. Common sense prevailed to sound thinkers. They will not allow any steel ammo of any kind. If a magnet stick to it you can't shoot it

went to the sporting clays course a couple of weeks ago. It is in great shape! The Rifle and Pistol range were still closed at that time.

Their web site has been updated several times in the last week with notes hours and construction. I will probably head over there tomorrow and I check out the pistol range, if it is open.

The Rifle Range Rules say "No full metal jacket or steel jacketed ammunition allowed. " I hope this part has just not been updated, but I suspect they will stick with this ban.

I have really enjoyed shooting clays with my buddies each time we've gone to Elm Fork. It's pretty nice to have your own section to relax and have a game of skeet. They're pretty good about refilling the launchers when they start running out of clays, and the prices there are very fair. I don't think I've ever spent more than $20 in a session (sans ammo)

AWESOME to hear! It's been awhile since I've shot out there - the old owner didn't exactly leave me feeling warm and fuzzy (the FMJ/black rifle stuff - I've got "normal" firearms too!). Can anyone else verify that they are full-auto friendly? The only range that I've shot full-auto at around here is DFW Gun Range...I recall that the range off of Hwy 380 was/is full-auto friendly, but I've never shot there.

Wonderful news - thanks, txinvestigator :woohoo
http://www.elmfork.com/ websites says, "100 yard Rifle Range The range will be open August 9th"

Their website also says NO FMJ. I am going to call anyway to get the bad news and to also clarify if it is NO FMJ or NO MAGNETIC FMJ. Bullettrap and Targetmasters indoor ranges allow FMJ if it is not magnetic and they test the ammo. I bought my own magnet so I could test my ammo before I go. Most of the FMJ is magnetic for surplus and not allowed.

I would love to shoot 100yds w/ the non magnetic surplus ammo I have (8mm mauser yugo sniper stuff) and it would be a relief to not have to drive to Gibson's Outpost in Mesquite so this could be really great news!

See the website on link below for more FMJ shooting range info.

I hope this was a coherent post.. it is very late.

I just called Elm Fork today and they said NO FMJ. Soft point or frag only on 100 yard range.

I wanted to clarify (even though no clarification was necessary) and they said no fmj (magnetic or non magnetic).

I will still have to drive to Gibson's Outpost to shoot 100 yd fmj.

they said that the 100 yd range will open on Sat Aug 9th as scheduled.
