Ruger vs marlin PCC's

Curious as to your thoughts on the marlin vs ruger 9mm carbines? THe Marlin (surprisingly) is a few hundred $ more in available guns.

I'm also intrigued by he 45acp version of the Marlin,it also looks like a lot of fun!

Ruger now has 4 different versions of their carbine. Original, Mlock, AR style and now the pistol version. All can take either Glock or Ruger magazines, threaded barrel and excellent reviews. I own the original but moved up to the AR style and both were exceptional rifles.

The ,45 version of the Marlin is hard on stocks the ones that I have seen that were used, had the stocks split behind the receiver. Also there are no parts. Marlin stopped making them a long time ago, and now Marlin is owned by Ruger.

I didn't think about parts... I live in a 1911 world so I never think about parts not being easily obtained....

Paul Harrell compares the Ruger PC9 to the Beretta CX4 Storm 9mm and the Marlin Model 9 carbines. It’s a pretty good comparison.


Speaking for myself, I own a Ruger PC9 takedown, which I have left stock except for the addition of a Primary Arms RDS. It is true that it is not nearly as accurate as you would expect a carbine to be when compared to a pistol, but it is accurate enough, and it IS more accurate than a pistol. It compares well against the other two carbines, although I seem to remember Harrell preferring the Beretta. The Marlin qualifies as a fun gun, but if Harrell's results are typical for old Marlins, I wouldn’t depend on one as a primary SD carbine.

Personally, despite its reliability, I can’t get past the Beretta's looks. Plus, the Ruger takes my Glock mags.....which was a major selling point for me.

That was a good video, thanks for posting it. Lots of quality info and honest comparison. It did eliminate the marlin from consideration. But also introduced some concerns for the ruger.

I was really surprised at the accuracy tests on all 3. One of the purposes for this gun requires more accuracy than he could get from any of them.

Time to rethink it.

When I think of comparative accuracy in a carbine, my benchmark is an AR15. My PC9 is a lot more accurate than my Glock 19, but it’s nowhere near as accurate as any of my ARs. It’s not horrible. What it IS is accurate enough with its RDS for its intended purpose, which would be for targets that are inside of 100 yards against which 9mm would be an effective cartridge. Compared to that, I’d be confident of hitting accurately well beyond 200 yards with my 11.5” SBR in 5.56—also topped with an RDS—with considerably more power than a 9mm.

The benefits I see in the PC9 are:

1. It takes my Glock mags.
2. It takes down and packs away.
3. It is accurate enough, and the added velocity gives 9mm some extra punch and range.
4. Oh, and it takes my Glock mags and takes down and packs away.
5. Did I mention that it takes my Glock mags?
6. Also, it takes down and packs away.

I actually like the PC9 a lot. It’s just not a replacement for an AR. What I use it for is as a handy gun with handy magazine compatibility, which can stay tucked away in its backpack in the back of my vehicle against a rainy day. But I still also have an AR carbine in the vehicle most days too.

My range was max at 25 yards but sub 1 inch groups. Lots of holes in holes. Get that optic dialed in and you can make smiley faces on steel all day long.

Purely from memory, I got maybe 1.0”-1.5” at 25 yards, but I don’t remember actually measuring it except by eyeball. IOW, more accurate than my pistol, and less accurate than my AR.
