Let’s talk .22 pistols

Yeah yeah. I know. The topic has been beaten to death. But I’m looking for a 22 semi and I think I’ve narrowed it down to either the Taurus TX22 or the Kel-Tec P17. Both have 16 round capacity, decently priced and good reviews.

EDIT: I currently own a Ruger Mark IV and have access to both a Beretta Neos and Heritage Rough Rider revolver.

I love my TX22. Accurate and feels like full size - but light. Plus, mine has never had a failure in several hundred rounds. I like the idea of the P17 but like most Kel Tecs, when you want one you can't find it. I also saw early reviews where it didn't look too reliable even with recommended ammo but I think they may have worked those issues out. Does anyone on the forum have one? I'd be interested in their opinion.

I have a 45ACP style .22 pistol that's made by Walther under license from Colt. It's the same weight (unloaded) as a 45ACP and handles about the same. I like it, although I probably paid a little too much because I needed it about 2012, right around the time of Obummer's re-election.

The mechanics are different, the .22 has a fixed barrel and it's strictly blowback. For about $20 you can get a replacement muzzle tip with threads for a suppressor.

If only the hearing protection act would come back to life…
I'm not holding my breath for that right now.

Depending on what your end goal is, I really like the S&W M&P 22c insofar as it very accurately replicates the fit and function of a centerfire handgun. Manipulation and handling is the same (no so for say a Buckmark or Ruger Mk series) as a centerfire gun and the thing just runs. I have almost 2k suppressed rounds through mine since the last time I actually cleaned it. I’ve locked the slide back and sprayed it with gun scrubber one or twice since but that’s been it.

Edited to add: The original S&W M&P22 was produced by Walter under license from S&W as noted by poster below. These used 12 round mags. The newer 22c is a S&W produced gun that utilizes 10 round mags. Just for clarity sake.

The TX 22 is what I would buy if I was in the market. I would steer away from the Glock 44. Too many failures and some cracked their slides. Taurus seems to be making a comeback as far as quality.

This is my favorite as well. It also makes a great training pistol for new shooters - light, easy to load, accurate and reliable.
