It's my feeling that they simply go after statues/buildings which, while they have zero to do with racism, slavery, etc, they know we respect - eg. SRV, churches, etc.

My theory:
1. It's an 'Up Yours!' to us because they know it angers us.
2. To provoke a violent response so they can claim to be the injured party (and get people jailed, doxxed, cancelled, etc)
3. To test the speed and limits of any official response.
4. To exert the authority of the mob to intimidate naysayers there and in the future.

I would add another theory: The ones tearing down or defacing statues are just plain ignorant and are vandalizing the statues because they are statues. It's the cool thing to do if you're angry at the system. Doesn't matter who, what, or why the statue is in place. It's a statue and has to come down. What did SRV do to anybody?

Yeppers. I fully agree that some of this cancel culture is orchestrated and malicious. But some of it is simply stupid, ignorant people who see a statue. Miguel de Cervantes is clearly an old colonialist-looking dude. Col. Hans Christian Heg's statue looked--before it was tossed in a lake--like an old civil war dude. And the statue of Stevie Ray Vaughn--with the hat and the full-coverage poncho--maybe looked like some Old West territorialist.

Oh, and besides... SRV griped about the weather.

Spray painting the statue of Jimi Hendrix...I got no idea. Surely nobody could have been ignorant enough to mistake the Stratocaster in his hands as being a civil war era rifle. Well...on second thought...there is that whole very troubling IQ bell curve thing goin' on...

Of course, but I'm more specifically concerned about the malignant than the ig'nt ;)

Okay. AndyC has the solution. We need to mandate that all protesters/demonstrators choose and wear one of two T-shirts so that they can be properly identified. One T-shirt says MALIGNANT, and the other says IG'NT.


Oh, and BTW, just saw on the news that Walmart has announced it will stop displaying or selling the Mississippi flag in its stores because, of course, that state flag contains the CSA battle flag in the upper-left corner.

“We believe it’s the right thing to do, and is consistent with Walmart’s position to not sell merchandise with the confederate flag from stores and online sites, as part of our commitment to provide a welcoming and inclusive experience for all of our customers in the communities we serve.”

I expect that the State of Mississippi will cave quickly and ratify a new, redesigned flag in a few months...if not weeks.
