“Emergency rooms have about half the normal number of patients, and heart and stroke units are nearly empty, according to doctors at many urban medical centers. Some medical experts fear more people are dying from untreated emergencies than from the coronavirus.”

Re: Corona Virus (COVID-19)( SARS-CoV-2) from China: Its going to be bad.
Fear-based news stories prey on the anxieties we all have and then hold us hostage. Being glued to the television, reading the paper, or surfing the Internet increases ratings and market shares — but it also raises the probability of depression relapse.
In previous decades, the journalistic mission was to report the news as it actually happened, with fairness, balance, and integrity. However, capitalistic motives associated with journalism have forced much of today's television news to look to the spectacular, the stirring, and the controversial as news stories. It's no longer a race to break the story first or get the facts right. Instead, it's to acquire good ratings in order to get advertisers, so that profits soar.
News programming uses a hierarchy of if it bleeds, it leads. Fear-based news programming has two aims. The first is to grab the viewer's attention. In the news media, this is called the teaser. The second aim is to persuade the viewer that the solution for reducing the identified fear will be in the news story. If a teaser asks, "What's in your tap water that YOU need to know about?" a viewer will likely tune in to get the up-to-date information to ensure safety.
Consider limiting your exposure to media. Give yourself a set time once or twice a day to check in on local and global happenings.

“I am an EMT riding about 40 hours a week with a busy NJ volunteer agency. We are seeing a spike in strokes and cardiac arrests. We have had at least 5 CPRs since Good Friday (CPR calls are rare). Our Medics are pronouncing patients frequently. We are seeing almost nobody with COVID. These are patients who have common and treatable conditions who are not seeing their doctors, are not going to the hospital, and are calling us too late. Please don't wait to call because you're afraid. The life you save may be your own.”

Rapid spread in call center. Limited to one floor in a 19 story building.
South Korea did not lock down instead relied on testing and tracing.

CNN raising the death toll predictions from early opening.
I read that a full 1/3 of deaths in the US were in nursing homes.
Did anyone do anything to limit deaths in nursing homes where people don’t leave their rooms?
Not a thing.

My mom lives in an assisted living facility in Pasadena, California. She’s 95. Initially, the home was put on "external" lockdown, meaning no outside visitors. This even included no immediate family, so my two younger brothers who both live locally were no longer allowed in to check on her. Then, on 3/29, the home had its first case—a food server in the kitchen was sent home after not feeling well, who tested positive for COVID-19 afterward. Apparently, transmission from food handling is a lower risk (I don’t know why) than social proximity, and as far as I know, nobody in that home has come down with COVID-19. So from THAT perspective, she’s safe. But it’s not enough.philip964 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 10:30 am https://apple.news/AUJBd-AyrQ_elOdsGdKNGBA

Here’s my mom's concern.... and I confess that the idea hadn’t even occurred to me until she brought it up.... She has been declining more rapidly lately, and showing signs of dementia and chronic UTI. Her main pleasures in life at this point have been gathering for meals in the dining room and visiting with the other residents, and playing Scrabble with a small group friends (a game at which she is ruthless and very good). But ever since that employee got sick, the residents are on complete lockdown in their rooms. Their meals are being brought to them, and they’re not allowed outside of their rooms....so no visiting and companionship. She knows that her remaining time in this life is very short. She tearfully told me back around 4/1 that she doesn’t want her life to end this way—locked down, and separated from her family and friends.
I can’t begin to express how deeply this bothers me.

There is much more to life than just "living". Our society seems to be forgetting this very important detail. The Annoyed Man wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 11:26 am

Whether or not life is WORTH living is important too. And that decision can on,y be made by the individual. I wonder what the facility would do if my brothers decided along with my mom to take her into one of their own homes. Would the facility let her go? Would they try to stop my brothers through legal means?03Lightningrocks wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 12:01 pmThere is much more to life than just "living". But it’s not enough.

I hate to say this but they already have the drop on ya'll. They are in possession of your mom. Considering you folks can't walk in there and get your mom, you would have to request they bring her out. If they refuse, seek to get her through your own legal means. The Annoyed Man wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 12:05 pmWhether or not life is WORTH living is important too. Kalifornia is a state that firmly believes government knows what is best for people. It would be interesting to learn what comes of it.

What we are experiencing, in my opinion, isn’t “living” - its existing. The Annoyed Man wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 12:05 pm Whether or not life is WORTH living is important too.
Take away our social interactions (real not social media), our gathering to worship as a body (not via social media), our freedom to go and do as we please regardless of how others like or dislike what we do and the liberty to express our views openly without government taking action is not living.
The government isn’t even trying to cover up what they are doing...people just have to look beyond what’s routed to their screens.
Some days lately I feel like I understand the frustrations that the early patriots felt when most of the population of the colonies just went along with King George.

USA hospitalization below 100,000 for Covid 19. USA passes 1 million Covid 19 cases. One third of all Covid 19 cases worldwide are in the USA, but only 26% of the deaths. The USA has 17.2 deaths per 100,000 people. China .33 deaths per 100,000 people. In Europe, only Germany is better than the USA with 7.39 deaths per 100,000 people. Most European countries have a death rate double or more than ours with Belgium being the worst. at 63.10 deaths per 100,000 people. Apparently New Mexico has a real hot spot for Covid 19 with some counties having 1000 cases per 100,000 people.
