Shadow Systems MR 918 Elite

#1

Post by txhighlander »

While I am not a Glock fan they have lots going for them. Any simpleton ( me) can learn to fix them and probably never send them back to a gunsmith. However the grip angle just isn't my deal so if I where to purchase another one it would have to have a grip reduction , trigger job , sights etc then it would be hitting the $1200 to $1500 range. Well that just isn't going to work.

Enter Shadow Systems MR 918 Elite. At first it looks like a fancy Glock but it is so much more. The frame has been designed by these guys and lots of real world experience shows in how it fits the hand and handles being shot. The trigger is good with a very positive and short reset. The sights are a plain black rear with Ameriglo loaded front with a yellow ring around the insert. The slide has excellent serrations on side and top and the elite model has slots cut into the slide to reduce slide mass. The barrel is fluted for weight reduction and supposed to help get trash out quicker. I have the threaded barrel so a muzzle break or can could be used.

Friday I set up a feed bag at 15 yards and gave it the first workout. Flawless with a 100 rounds of Sig elite, both 115 fmj and 124 v crown, Hornady critical defence and a hodge podge of accumulated hollow points. No ftf's . The first 15 I shot low and left which got corrected with the second 15 and learned the reset. The third 15 I did something I normally don't do in front of witnesses, unloading all 15 into the target as fast as I can. Normally this means hitting everything but the target but this time all 15 went into the target in a 12" to 14" group. The pistol impressed me very much an after all these years I don't impress easy.

Saturday I went back to the range for a few more and had one missfire but fired the second time thru. The ammo was fiocchi 115 hollow points. Other than that it just keeps amazing me. It also has a rms cut for a reflex sight but the cut is a little deeper so certain reflex sights will mount on the slide and set low enough that you can use your pistol sights as backup in case of reflex sight failure. I tried to post pictures but it didn't work but it can be looked up on Shadow Systems web site. They are located in Plano Tx.

How does it compare to the Glock 19 size?

Same size, will fit all Glock 19 holsters, any parts will interchange. If using a muzzle break it would need a 34 holster. I will probably buy another one to carry if I decide to put the break on it.

John Farnam is at the SHOT Show in Vegas and gave a positive review to a newer model Shadow Systems pistol, so I looked up their website.

They are now offering a MR920 as well as the original MR918. They tout a bunch of improvements over the 918 based on customer comments from the last year. Among them a threaded barrel.

On my first read through, it appears it not only fits Glock 19 holsters, it uses Glock-compatible magazines. That's a plus as far as I'm concerned.

Very interesting.

Hmmm. I'm sort of wishing I had not stumbled over this. It's almost as bad as when AndyC comes up with one of his new purchases or ideas, or Carlson puts up another fine handgun for sale...

Not a good picture and I removed the mag well because of my large hands. Added a RMR and I carry it in a Garrett Silent Thunder STX 2.0 (OWB). Most of the time. Sunday’s I wear a TT Gunleather like below. Different pistol pictured, same holster and mag holder.

That looks nice, but with a hefty price tag. PSA will have a G19 clone with supressor height sights, RDS plate cut and threaded barrel for 399, at least that was the news from SHOT.

I bought mine brand new for $549.99. The RMR was extra. I consider by the time you bought a Glock and fixed it the way you wanted it that it would be more. withe Shadow Systems the cut for the RMR is low enough you can use the night sights that come with the pistol so no extra purchasing of Supressor sight. The problem I have always had with the Glock is the grip. It would never just feel good in my hand. The Shadow Systems completely does away with the grip with their back straps. The straight back strap gives you the 1911 feel. Their straps are not small, medium, and large. They change the way the pistol fits in your hand.

I will pick up my second one tommorow. It is a combat that was traded in because the owner wanted one that had the sight cut. I like the feel of my M&P much better but I shoot the Shadow Systems with greater accuracy and consistency.

I get a full grip on the pistol before unholstering and with the flat back strap in comes to target every time.

I had the wonderful privilege honor and of meeting Richie and Trevor at Shadow Systems in Plano today. It was one of the greatest times I have spent with people other than family at church. Both of these guys today were upstanding and awesome to deal with. Their customer service is out of this world. No one in that very busy placed passed me up without speaking. I had an issue with one of my pistol of my own making so I called and they said come over and they would take care of it. They not only fixed the one I messed up, but fixed the second one so I wouldn’t mess it up. LOL. Yea I sold something I didn’t want sale so I could get another. You know two is better than one especially if the second one is FDE. They also did a little something to trigger with an upgraded part. I am sorry, but I don’t know what it was. Great people. I look forward doing business with them for years to come. I have never been able to say that I was “Glock Fan” because I guess of the 1911 grip and the love I have for that pistol. I can now say and very proudly if this pistol continues to perform like it does then I will be a “Shadow Systems Fan.”
