FWIW, I ended up with an 09 RX350, which has been a great car... I'm about to head out of the country again, and my brother is buying it from me

Some of us don't buy new cars. I thought this was a new thread and SIA and myself are kindred spirits. I bought my 03 accord in 2011 with 130k on the clock which put it 8 years old at the time. I purposely chose a 5 speed because long term I knew it would last longer than an auto. She's got 275k on it now, uses a little oil, and I just put new tires on her. The plan is to evaluate how its running about 315k and see if I keep driving it. I drive the company truck home most of the time so it will take awhile now.

Believe it or not, they are about as close as you can get... the 02 is a loaded SLT Z71 and the 20 is an AT4.... basically the modern day equivalent, except the 20 comes from the factory with 2" of lift.

The updates in pick up trucks over the years is just unreal. I was blown away by the options my truck had in 2013. There is crap in it I have still not figured out how to use. I saw a commercial the other day where trucks can back themselves up with a trailer on them now. 20 years from now they will be driving themselves.

Yep. My first truck was a 68 F100 with a 360 and 3 speed on the column. 4 wheel drum brakes, no power steering, no ac, and no carpet. I still have it but it needs work. Haven't driven her in 20 years. Nowadays, you could leave the keys in it and winding down. Nobody would know how to steal it

Yep. My first truck was a 68 F100 with a 360 and 3 speed on the column. 4 wheel drum brakes, no power steering, no ac, and no carpet. I still have it but it needs work. Haven't driven her in 20 years. Nowadays, you could leave the keys in it and winding down. Nobody would know how to steal it

Yep, and I forgot the coolest part. The gas tank was behind the seat! Hahaha. I wish I still had that 1966 Chevy. The older trucks are going for some pretty good money these days.

We bought two brand new vehicles in 2015—the first time we’ve ever done that. I bought a 2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail, and my wife bought a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. We looked at a RAV4 for her, but she didn’t like it. I actually tried to steer her to either the Isuzu Forrester or the Outback because I thought she’d have a much happier ownership experience. They’re not as fancy as the Cherokee, but they’re dead nuts reliable. Her Jeep has had a couple of issues...not the least of which was the ease with which the management software could be remotely hacked through her cellphone, a problem which became public knowledge not long after we bought it. It also has had a repeating glitch with the setting that switches the engine off when she stops at a light. It’s a fuel saving measure, and it stops working each time it’s been turned back on. But she’s happy with it because it suits her self image, so there is that.

I bought my 4Runner as a replacement for a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder SE 4x4. I was 63 when I bought the Toyota, and based on the experience of other family members with Toyotas, I figured that it would last at least 300,000 - 350,000 miles if I just stay on top of the oil changes and maintenance schedule...if not more than that. I chose the Trail model because I wanted a pretty off-road competent SUV, and I couldn’t afford a TRD Pro. I’ve put 34,000 miles on it since March of 2015....and 6,000 of those were road trip miles to California and back twice. So really, my annual mileage is around 5,600 miles. At this rate, it’ll take me 53.5 years to hit 300,000 miles. In other words, this is the last car I’ll ever buy.

Speaking of gas tanks, I had an 86 Chevy stepside with the "exploding" side-sadldle gas tanks. What a crock and 60 Minutes had to pay GM handsomely for that libel if I remember correctly. The things that I loved most was that it was so old school: step-side chassis, wood bed, 5 digit odometer, small profile, V8, 350 trans, but power windows, locks, steering, brakes, cruise control, AC, etc. It was nicer and updated but used the same proven parts since 73. Never had a real problem with it. Driving from Lubbock to Taos, NM circa 1992 I really appreciated those dual tanks. Wasn't gas less than $1 a gallon? Ah, the good old days. Now that AARP says I'm a se ior citizen I'm allowed to remainecese like this, right? (Just to be clear, their application went into the garbage.)
