I don't always keep my XD locked and loaded at the house. Well, no problem normally. The other night I heard a noise and tried to pull back the slide on my gun. No dice. It stuck. Of course I thought what in the world is wrong with this gun, I just cleaned it!
After messing around with it for a minute or so, I realized you have to have the grip safety pressed to be able to bring the slide back and load a round. Not something you want to think about if you really need a round loaded. I'm too used to Glocks. They don't have that problem.

I just got my XD today and found my self wondering what in the world you were talking about as I didn't notice. Just went to check to find you are very right. I guess my grip is naturally around that when pulling the slide so I hadn't really thought about that. Good to know!

I sometimes have this issue when I'm cleaning mine, but since I keep a round in the chamber, I don't expect to need to cycle the slide in an emergency. I suppose it could happen, but as you noted, if you have a good grip on it, it doesn't seem to have that issue.

Just bought my first pistol ever (I've shot plenty but never owned). It's an XD .40 subcompact. I cycled the slide without any issues as soon as I got home to make sure the chamber was clear. After reading the manual more later I realized that the grip safety had to be pressed when cycling. Of course it wasn't a problem when I did it earlier since that was the natural thing to do.... Not sure why it would be an issue. Really in use the grip safety is like it's not even there.

I own two, a 9mm and the .45ACP both in the 4" service.
I have well over 2k rounds in the 9 and close to 1k through the .45 with no failures.
I love my XD's and would recommend them to anyone.
As for having to grip the weapon to cycle the slide; Yes, it's an inconvenience, but it's actually a safety feature if you sit an think about it. Besides, I keep one in the pipe -- always.
If I had a choice, I'd purchase the .40 and then go with the 9mm barrel so I could burn the cheaper ammo for practice.
