The bow of the World War II submarine USS Grunion has been discovered 77 years after the sub went missing off the remote Aleutian Islands in Alaska on her first war patrol.

A total of 52 U.S. Submarines were lost in WWII with 374 officers and 3131 men of the Submarine Force who gave their lives. Currently there have been seven of these “Lost 52” that have been found.

Thank you for the post Grayling.

Based on total size of manning, the submarine service in WWII lost a larger percentage killed in action than any other command. Rest easy, brothers on eternal patrol. We have the watch.

Another lost WW2 Submarine has been located. USS Grayback SS 208 lost to a Japanese bomb off the coast of Japan 27 Feb 1944
