TX: Katy man gets into gun fight with car burglars after casing them in his car

So it didn’t start as self defense. He saw three teenagers breaking into cars.

He apparently got them to flee and was chasing them in his car while talking with 911. ( talking with 911 was a good idea ). He lost sight of them, but then they ambushed him as he drove by, I guess and they started shooting at him. This is where it becomes self defense. They got in a gun fight. He wounds a 15 year old, before the deputies arrive.

I’d say he was lucky.

Good for him but I don't think it was wise to chase them down. It's one thing to confront them on your property but chasing … ?

It May have worked out this time, maybe. It is it a good ideal to chase people over theft.
