When you purchase a new handgun do you show your chl?

Yes sir.
When you choose what you want & begin the paper work, show your CHL. They will not need to do the background. It will save a call, some waiting, & you can leave.

This is true in most cases. However, some places still put you through the standard call in/verification. Bass Pro is one of these places. Last time I purchased a handgun there, it took at least 30 minutes. I used my CHL, filled out the paperwork, and then waited for the sales clerk to make the call and record all of their paper work. I was then escorted to the door (clerk carried my newly purchased weapon even though I was carrying my own). Didn't have a chance to carry my newly acquired piece until I was outside their building. I guess it could have been worse. At least they let me carry it across the parking lot.

I won't shop at stores that continue to make a call on CHL holders!
It's been a long time since I have even been in a store where they do this and if I ever go into one and decide to buy something, when they hand me the paperwork and I show my CHL I will ask them "do you plan on making a call on this transaction" and if they say yes, then I just say "no thank you" and leave.

It is not required for them to do it and it is an invasion of my rights as far as I am concerned.

Just curious. Do they have a "perp walk" policy for gun purchasers like many of the big chains do? This is where they walk you out into the parking lot before handing over your new purchase.

I myself refuse to buy a gun at any store that doesn't trust me enough to hand it over after I have paid for it.

Yes, you get the escort and the doors opened - everything, but the limo. What is funny is the one you just bought is unloaded in a box and sometimes tes with the strings. The one you are carrying is cokcdcd and locked with two extra mags.

I bought my new Kel-Tec about one month ago at Sportsman's Finest in Austin and I could not have been more pleased. As a new CHLer, I forgot to show it and while handing him my DL, he saw my CHL and said, "Is that thing current?" Of course I said yes and he replied, "Oh great, you just made both of our days easier!" I answered the standard questions on the form, wrote him a check and walked out. Check out time from gun selection to payment to butt in Jeep... Maybe 10 minutes.

It is funny.....in my case I had two on.......one cocked and locked and one wheelie in a ankle holster!

I can understand their policy on this though........they just sell a gun to somebody, do the phone check, and instead of handing over the gun to someone that may load it from ammo in their pocket and either rob or shoot up the place, they walk them out, ensuring the gun remains empty.

Problem is that they do this even with with people who have already shown their CHL and no calls were made!

I guess it's just too difficult to get employees that could distinguish between 2 different policies, so they just have the one for all!

Yes, I have heard great things about Sportsman's, including fair prices and friendly customer service! I have been meaning to go to the one in DFW area but I am afraid that I might buy something!

This policy got started because a guy went to Wal-Mart, bought a weapon, and then shot his ex-wife who worked there.

Fat lot of good it does, because you can just load in the parting lot, turn around, and walk back into the store.

The individually owned stores do not have these policies. How come they don't get shot up and/or robbed by their customers (who either have a CHL or have just passed a NICS check)?

Exactly what I told the Asst. Manager of our local Wal-Mart.

My brother came up from Houston to visit. He has two boys (pre- teens at the time). It was time to get them each a shotgun and start letting them shoot some skeet.

We ran into town, found a couple of shotguns that fit them, bought some shells and clay birds. Lady at the counter says we have to wait for a manager to escort us out of the store.

The poor manager shows up "eyes rolling" and before I can even utter a word, she offers her apology for the policy.

I mentioned that I could load the gun and return to the store immediately... so I didn't see the benefit in it.

She "one upped" me and said "You could overpower me before we even got out the store if you wanted to"!

Anyway, she was very nice about it all....and I could tell it was as much a bother to her as it was to us.

"Feel good" policy.
