The above link is must reading and viewing by anyone who has certain FN pistols, or who knows someone who does. In both text and video, the problems are explained in detail.

The Arizona DPS has discovered multiple safety problems with a few models of FN pistols, notably the FNS 9, but somewhere in the videos provided they list some other FN models.

The department was so upset with the safety problems that they are phasing out their FN's and replacing them with Glocks.

The Baltimore, MD LEO's found similar problems with their FN's.

The investigation did disclose that these safety problems do not exist in FN 509's.

To serve and protect but not let the public know of a potential life saving issue with the gun.

True, the news organization had to make a public records request to learn the details and make it publicly available.

This is reflected in the opening of the video, which was supposed to be an "internal use only" resource for AZ DPS.

I wonder what will happen to all the FN's which AZ and Baltimore turn in?

So the article starts out with a problem that seems completely unrelated to the out-of-battery boom problem. Where's the editor? sigh.

Keys in the holster was the proximate cause of an unintended discharge in Indiana a couple years ago...at the memorial service for an officer killed in the line of duty. Cops were packed in tight, one sat down next to another and on of the keys hanging off his belt got in the holster of the officer next to him. When he stood up...BOOM. IIRC the round hit the lower leg of cop in the row behind.

The out-of-battery problem is scary tho… I wonder if that is why the pistol is no longer in production?

I was looking at a used one yesterday at the gun store, glad I did not buy it.

Would this include FN 9 mm models that had a safty lock that locked the trigger?

Or is this a problem with an FN gun with a glock type of safety with no trigger lock.

Why any LE agency would not issue Glocks in the first place is beyond me.

This seems to be more of a holster not fully covering the trigger.

Wonder what the other two Department approved platforms were that had the same problem.

The article covered two separate problems as if they were one, which makes it confusing. It starts out with a problem of small objects getting in to the holster trigger guard. The other problem is the FNS9 can fire out of battery without the trigger being pulled.

I’m waiting for the keyboard cops to jump in and declare there’s no such thing as an accidental discharge. It’s a negligent discharge.

Anyway, let me get back to shopping for some hi cap clips for my AR15 full semiautomatic assault weapon.

There was a saying once " No one ever got fired for buying IBMs"

They were over priced, underpowered junk, but politically safe.

You all seem to have missed it... watch the video at the link of just follow this one.. after a few gentle mallet shots, even a simple hand slap to the mag well fires the gun. I almost skipped the video, but it shows a completely different (and serious) problem.

Fixed it for you.

If it’s just a matter of a foreign object finding its way inside the trigger guard, then (A) this seems more like a holster design issue, and (B) I’m not convinced that switching to Glock’s would entirely eliminate the problem. ....and I carry Glock’s myself, but they’re just mechanical objects, and bad juju CAN defeat their built-in safety systems if one is being careless with them.
