Dallas police say one of their officers was going home after her shift when she walked into the wrong apartment and shot the man inside.
The officer was in full uniform just after 10 p.m. Thursday evening when she walked into an apartment unit she believed to be her own at the 1200 block of South Lamar, about a quarter-mile from the Dallas Police Department.
The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean.
While inside, she pulled her firearm and shot Jean. He later died at the hospital from his injuries.

This will not bode well for the LEO. Prayers, for the victim, and his family.

The smell test indicates a hot steaming pile of poop at this point.

A few questions come to mind; How did she enter the wrong apartment? Was it unlocked? Were the locks so ineffective that any key unlocks any door? I agree, something doesn't smell right.

So did her key work on his door, or was the door unlocked? Either way, I would recognize I'm in the wrong apartment by sight once entering.

I thought HPD was having a day, now DPD has beat that. Quick, we need Florida to step up and take the heat off.
But seriously, that's going to be expensive.

Man that is not good. If that happened as first reported, she was eligible to be legally shot by the resident.
1200 S Lamar is an empty lot on Google maps and street view, although the satellite view shows it bulldozed off and some construction starting. Must be brand new apartments if the address is correct.

Depends on the apartment. If it is a long line of 30 identical buildings, then maybe... maybe it was an innocent mistake. If it is the typical quadplex or octaplex, I'm not really sure how you do that unless you are drunk.
Here is the street view of the building next door. Depending on how it looks inside, (IE bland hotel everything-is-the-same), I could see how it happens.
Locking your doors is a dang good idea.

Wouldn't one recognize the furnishings aren't theirs once inside? I think there is more to this story.

I use to frame apartments, condos and etc. They are usually identical or mirrored floor plans per building. However, your belongings (furniture) should be unique unless they come furnished. I wonder it he was a boyfriend or ex boyfriend.

Re: Officer Invades Apartment, Shoots Resident
I agree that what has been reported is rather hard to believe. If the officer gained entry because the door was unlocked (assuming no signs of tampering) why did she not take that as a first clue to her mistaken assumption that the apartment was hers. If the officer gained entry with a key, why did her key work? Once inside, there should have been other cues (visual, as well as perhaps auditory and olfactory) telling her she was in the wrong place.
I'd like to think the real story is simple -- tragic though it is -- but something just doesn't add up. I pray for peace for the victim's loved ones, and for strength for the officer facing consequences for her actions.

If the witness statement about hearing "Open up, Open Up!" it may have been the officer "mistakenly" trying to break in.ELB wrote: ↑Fri Sep 07, 2018 10:33 am A few more details, not many. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/crime/2 ... adquarters
