Head of state commission investigating the Parkland shooting, Sheriff Gualtieri of Pinellas County, is quoted by NYT reporter as saying:

"If he had somebody in there with a gun, they could have mitigated this," the sheriff said. "There were opportunities for staff to have intervened if they had been armed."

The murderer had to reload several times and the sheriff notes there were several times when the rifle was empty.

Parkland nationwide tour ends in Newtown, CT, a state with the toughest gun laws in the country.

But in both states licensed concealed carry is illegal in schools. It was that exact location that both mass shootings occurred.

Coincidence, I don’t think so.

Judge unhappy, school district wanted press punished by judge and held in contempt.

Press reported after they were sent a freedom of information request on the School shooter that he wasn’t properly advised by school district when he was disciplined his junior year.

Much of the report was blacked out as confidential.

Newspaper found that if they copied the text and pasted it, the redacted portion was revealed. Lol.

So they published it.

Supreme Court previously ruled not presses job to protect confidential information.

Deficiencies in school door and hardware design contributed to death toll. He killed students who were in locked classrooms without entering.

911 calls went to two different 911 call centers. Delaying response.

Shooter used 5 round magazines. Many opportunities for armed teachers to have ended his shooting spree while he was empty.

Plenty of incompetence, to go around. I thought that they conducted "lock down" drills. If so, how did the door lock issue not get discovered, before then?
And you stated, there were plenty of opportunities, for him to have been stopped, either by armed teachers, or non-cowardly LEO. JMHO

Parkland Report Finds School Had Plenty Of Warning, Might Have Prevented Attack
...with a Baker Act admission on his record, he wouldn’t have been able to purchase the AR-15 he used to commit this atrocity. In other words, they had the power to have prevented this act, yet they didn’t.

Meanwhile, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel has been trying to make this all about the NRA. His department dropped the ball. Broward County Schools dropped the ball. Pretty much everyone dropped the ball.

So much fail at so many levels. Seventeen people died because no one in the system would take the necessary steps to prevent NC from obtaining a firearm.

I doubt the little narcissist David Hogg will bother himself with understanding how it was the system that failed resulting in tragedy, not the NRA.

From the report:
The student was referred for evaluation in January 2002 at the age of three...He had recently been asked to leave a private prekindergarten program due to behaviors such as running, kicking, and biting...

The student was 3 years, 5 months old at the time of the evaluation. Results revealed delays in all developmental areas, with overall functioning "similar to a child who has just turned two years of age.”

...Academically, the IEP stated that his limited attention span made it difficult to participate in class and comprehend basic concepts. Social interaction was most challenging. He had begun to interact with classmates but required “maximum teacher assistance” and engaged in parallel play most of the time, meaning he would play near other children, but did not interact with them. Aggression such as biting, pinching, scratching, and hair pulling were reported.

...The student was five years, eight months old when the [next] evaluation was completed....It must be noted that in particular, [the student] seems to identify as an animal. He often crawls on the floor or ground, pounces on another student, makes seemingly animal-like growling sounds and grimaces while holding his hands in a paw-like manner.... With high levels of reinforcement, the behaviors reduced, but his aggressive behaviors appeared to be unpredictable

...Since the onset of the 2007 school period, he has had a marked increase in behavioral outbursts to include physical aggression as well as “shut down” behaviors requiring physical removal from the regular education classroom setting on a minimum of 4 out of 5 days and several times a day on certain days. [The student] also demonstrates behaviors that can last in duration as well as intensity.

...[April 2013]In the classroom setting [the student] causes unnecessary disruptions during class. Recently, the disruptions are all inappropriate for school and at times require removal from the classroom (i.e., screaming, using profanity).

...[2014]Many people may wonder why a student with 28 referrals was still in school. As described elsewhere in this report, as a student with a disability, federal and state law mandate the continuation of services during periods of suspension.

...As can be seen, the pattern of behavioral shifts originally observed in the elementary grades continued into middle school, but at a much higher level of intensity

...At this same time another student reported that he had spoken to her about depression and suicidal thoughts, and that he said he drank gasoline in an effort to hurt himself and had engaged in cutting behavior.
Maybe I missed it, but this report appears to whitewash the other reports that the school had been informed that Nikolas Cruz had talked about being a school shooter. It does document that Nikolas Cruz had a lifelong history of mental problems that could only be addressed by schooling him separately from the general population and that he was a threat to himself and others

I wonder what they thought should be done with him after he had completed that education separately. I wonder if they thought that he would have magically become non-violent or stopped having violent thoughts.

I'm sure the thought was, " he will be someone else's problem then"

Did you remember the Parkland High School shooting happened in Broward County, Florida?

So it should not surprise you the Sheriff encouraged inmates including Cruz to register to vote. Which he did.

His victims didn't get to vote this year.

What I saw treating victims at Parhland should change debate on guns.

AR15’s and 356 Magnums should be banned because they don’t wound they kill.

The Atlantic article is interesting in that it points out how the overwhelming majority of gun trauma arises from pistols. Nicholas Cruz shot a bunch of innocent kids with a semiautomatic .223 Remington with a 5 round DBM, which is not a rare weapon, nor has it been at any time since 1950. The deadly model 742, or the even more fearsome model 7400, fire the deadlier still .30-06, a round DESIGNED TO KILL. The deadly M1 Garand, a weapon of war which was even distributed to civilians, holds 8 shots. It's lighter stripperclips would've no doubt allowed Cruz to carry more ammunition, putting even more lives at risk.

Except that Dr. Sher notes that this is the first time that she's ever seen rifle trauma. It is impressive, but the fact that a radiologist only saw it once in her career speaks volumes regarding how focal gun crime actually is. The massive socoieconomic divide between people who Own guns and people with any measurable risk of being shot can't be better explained than in that anecdote.
